This is why we have been doing our best to point ourselves, our clients and our communities back to the Self. Whether it is embodied movement classes, community meditation groups, house therapy sessions, or first time home buyer classes, we have tended to a holistic approach to real estate, design and good neighbor-ing for almost twenty years. To keep it communal, most of what we offer is spread word of mouth. We have a print menu in our COLLECTIVE homebase that folks can pick up anytime with a current schedule as well as an ever evolving list of services. Stop by and grab one, have a cup of tea or coffee and say hello. Free hugs for the touchers. Warm smiles for everyone. Or check the newsletter at the beginning of each month for a snapshot of what is hot off the press. Spoiler alert. It’s us. And we are at your service. Happy June friends. What a beautiful month to be alive in this city, we call ‘home’.

We meet people where we are. And if where we are is aligned with what we love, well then, we might just end up spending our time doing interesting things with unique people who get us. About a decade ago when I was still serving on the board for Salt Lake Modern, a division of the then, Utah Heritage Foundation, (now Preservation Utah). Rosalie and I met over the love of learning, architecture, community, and all things mod. The proud owner, and caring steward of a quintessential Cliff May (lovingly referred to as the father of the mid-century ranch home) property in Olympus Cove.
And now here we are, all these years later still enjoying the embodiment of a house well designed and honestly built. A place that oriented its windows to the mountains, its bedrooms toward the garden and its side view to downtown. And inside, open in all the right places and cozy just where it counts.
When we think about what we love regarding home, it’s not just how our hearts sing when we see how good houses welcome home our friends, too. Or how nature is not kept out for one second. Or how we feel both safe and connected to the essence of a well built structure– it seems to me, that what we really love about these houses– is how they continue to introduce us to ourselves, every time we walk in the door. Nice to meet you.
And welcome Home.

“The Poetics of Space” by Gaston Bachelard reminds us that it’s “the house that remodels the man”.
We are who we are. But then we get carved and polished, remodeled and reworked by the environments and the people we spend our time with. The art we live with gives off the kinetic energy of its maker. We are kissed and brushed and spoken to by the whispers and punches of the creativity that we live around. The banister has messages of old growth trees. The wisdom is coming from inside the house.

How do we know what sturdy is in the body, if we didn’t stand on it first in the house? We resonate with the soul of a home, with its books and pages and plants, making it easier to sense our own abode. We feel places. Old windows. New life. We sit and slow down and read what’s on the shelves so that we remember to dust off what’s written in the libraries of our lives, too. I bow at all genuine houses, but it’s the old ones that always make me wanna stop. To be reverent. And silent. So we can read between the lines. In the quiet, we find the best kept secrets. Whispering.
“I’m available. Come home.”

Homelovers find one another, a benefit of the trade.
Dana and I served for years together on the Mid-century Modern Board (A division of Preservation Utah). We have been caring for houses, and each other, ever since. To that end, as a lover of all things food, it’s her friends and visitors that benefit. With a wide open kitchen there is plenty of space for chatting about what matters most in life, health, and each other.
What a gift it is to have the space to be in communion, and to see your friends shine. We love loft life at The Broadway, a place for neighbors to come together without a commute. Low footprint, high reward. Less waste. In a world where preservation matters, this building constructed in 1900 sets an example for all of us. And reminds us that what matters most in long lasting relationships, is not just how sturdy they are, but also, how they feel. Thanks for the food, the friendship and the love Dana.

You and your place are absolutely one of a kind. And are definitely passing the test of time.

The only way our homes will ever really remain meaningful to us over time, is if they satisfy in us a deeper sense of what it means to be securely housed in our bodies, hearts, and minds.

What a beautiful month to be alive in this city, we call ‘home’.

Hi friends! You’re invited! Our doors are always open at cityhome, and Saturday the 3rd of May is no exception. Come hear the music, see the art, talk to our crew of creatives and property consultants about all things home, our favorite topic and our highest value at cityhome. We are a COLLECTIVE of house lovers. And we would love to see you, be with you, hear about you, and invite you into our house on South Temple. Details below.
What: You are invited to an Open House at cityhomeCOLLECTIVE.
Who: Friends, clients, neighbors, family, and house/architecture/community lovers alike!
Why: Well, because we host open houses for clients we represent and for historic properties we are trying to save in our city, all the time. We host block parties and neighborhood classes and speaker series, but we can’t remember the last time we held the doors open for folks who might just wanna come see our space, take a tour, talk house and home with like minded folks.
Mostly, the work we do is creative, heartfelt, intentional, and oftentimes private. Our clients call us House Therapists and for good reason, we tend to leave the surface pretty quickly where home is concerned. Both in the body, and in the structure. So we figured, spring is a good time to continue welcoming everyone into the conversation that we have been having regarding the significance of space and home, for twenty plus years now. And we want you to know you’re welcomed here.
Where: Our home in the city, 645 E South Temple, cityhomeCOLLECTIVE.
When: Saturday May 3rd 11:00 – 3:00 (with a qigong class at 10:00 AM).
Happy Homing.

At cityhome we have been returning to our bodies to find home for a long while now. It’s no wonder that so many of us house-lovers have found ourselves in Utah, where nature helps us encounter that inner sense of wholeness. Soul-shelter. Home.
And as we continue to work on our outer and our inner environments, as individuals and as a COLLECTIVE, one thing is certain, the more we find ourselves in sync with the natural world around us, the more we crave a homebase that is healthy, and happy. Who knew, being in harmony with our home-bodies, makes for better houses, communities, and earth– this home that we all share. And vice-versa. This is why we offer community classes that aim to bring us Home. To ourselves. And to each other.
We can learn a lot from the wisdom of our network. And we have been for ages.
One such friend of ours, Heather Harris has been showing up on significant date changes on our seasonal calendar wheel, helping us care for the homes that we are, as well as the homes that we live in. As we continue to return toward our ever changing selves, and syncing with the seasons of this always changing natural world, I asked Heather to point us toward what gathering we are moving toward next, now that our Spring Equinox gathering with Kera is behind us. In her words;
“Bealtaine is the ancient Celtic celebration of the first day of summer! Its name means ‘bright fire’ and many of the rituals surrounding May 1, or days surrounding the midway point between the Equinox and Solstice, involve large bonfires, dancing, and bright yellow flowers. It’s a time to cleanse our homes, our bodies and intentions for what we’d like to bring into the brightest time of the year! Purification and celebration go hand in hand at this fertile time in our seasonal calendar. What seeds are we planting for our summer season? What is calling us to be cleared out to make space for those seeds to grow abundantly?”
In a world fraught with division, it feels as important as ever, to find a language in common. Practices in common. Ones that do not discriminate and that nourish. To find each other looking at the same stars, and warming our hands by a shared fire, setting intentions on behalf of self, planet, and others– is to be communally Home. What a gift we all are to each other when we celebrate the diverse seeds we offer, all planted in the same soil of one earth.
Deeply rooted in his Irish heritage, our Celtic brother Stephen Pitcher has been offering his care and wisdom to our cityhome community in the form of wisdom sharing, sacred drumming, and good guy space holding. His take on the upcoming evening that he continues to co-host with Heather;
“This is an opportunity for us to remember that we are not in nature; we are Nature. Traditionally the Celts lit fires for Bealtaine to remind us that we are light, that we can express light, colours, warmth, life itself. We can illuminate ourselves and those around us physically and energetically. This is a call to remember that our physical presence matches our spiritual presence, revealing our humanity, expressing our physicality, and being our true selves, in all our glory.”
Amen to that. And shout out to all of us for giving a damn about Home. About each other. About our bodies, and our neighbors. As well as our differing beliefs. Whatever they are, it is certain that they can be held in the grandness of the cosmos and this concept of Shelter.
Join us, if it feels like a ‘yes’.
Either way, let’s keep Being Human.
Together.
THURSDAY, MAY 1ST 5:30PM-9:00PM | 645 E SOUTH TEMPLE
A good relationship knows how to breathe, together and apart. Knows how to be close and give space. Knows how to compliment, and shine solo. What a joy it is to see people (and pup) be with each other in a way that makes sense. Every so often, and more and more in life, I am proud of my clients, my friends, humans, living beautifully. When folks relate well to each other, and care together for a home, it is palpable. Inspiring. And warm.
When we think of mid-century architecture, we think of a time when folks wanted freedom. Space away from the cluster of the cities, privacy from the chaos of the world. Refuge. This 1959, Stephen Macdonald designed home, teaches us to look out at nature, and to feel our distance from the buzz of the city within view. Still close and connected to the convenience of modern life, but closer to the trails at the base of Mount Ogden, perfectly framed by deliberate glass. The third acre lot sits calm on a cul-de-sac that contributes to the privacy and connectivity of a neighborhood more still these days by comparison. As the world finds itself frantic and often, we find ourselves longing for simpler lives, with friends and family and furry ones.
For nature, real materials, and quality craftsmanship. For preservation of honest designs and worthy details.
We want relationships that are built to last. Worth tending to. Both in their autonomy, and their connectivity. More to come on this gem, but for now, a genuine thank you to all the homemakers out there, for preserving what matters. And for showing us what it looks and feels like to have a healthy, happy, house.
