For the last 23 years, Liberty Heights Fresh–a superb little shop on the corner of 1300 East and 1100 South–has been making big waves on the palates and plates of many a Salt Lake local. Set in a 20s-era gas station, it’s a wee space that houses a big passion for good food. Owner and founder, Steven Rosenberg’s, philosophy and free spirit is tangible in every part of LHF. A chat with Steve is akin to living the same philosophy yourself. For him, a sincere commitment to quality food means ingredients that come from ethical sources, aren’t harmful to the Earth, and that your great, great grandparents would recognize.
For such a small space, the variety is endless and widespread.
A stroll into Liberty Heights is an introduction to a carefully-curated cornucopia of worldly flavors, some from far-reaching destinations and others grown no further than our own backyards. You’ll want to have plenty of time and a curious mind: this is a place for slowly browsing your favorites and trying at least one jar of something new each time. Black truffle oil, humanely-raised eggs, beef, and pork, a wall of chocolate, and sparkling jars of Amour preserves (you’ll want to watch for flavors like Apricot Rose and Pear Lavender). The offerings inside are a direct reflection of Steve’s wanderlust, and he and his crew often travel far and wide in search of the best to share with our little city. They’ll settle for nothing less than quality and authenticity. That said, Utah’s local products definitely take center stage, as well. Those who want to taste the best of local and regional products, will find that this is definitely the place.
