It’s no secret that, as of late, division and discord have become defining features of our national discussion. Given the diversity of our COLLECTIVE makeup, we’re always willing to hear and acknowledge the other side. However, there is one crusade where we find compromise to be a bit…counterintuitive. Namely, the concept of human rights for all (novel, isn’t it?)–particularly when it comes to the “love” and “pursuit of happiness” parts.
Near and dear to our hearts–thanks to their fierce advocacy for the above sentiment–The Human Rights Campaign has become a cornerstone of LGTBQ communities around the country, including right here in SLC. And they’re not alone in their efforts. The HRC has amassed a membership of more than three million people nationwide, all with the goal of creating a world in which “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community”. The annual HRC Gala is a night to celebrate the steps taken toward equality in the past year, as well as a chance to give thanks to the countless community members whose contributions have made our city and state that much more inclusive for everyone. This year’s fete (the 14th, to be precise) will take place in the Grand America Hotel ballroom, and we think attendance is an easy and entertaining way to show solidarity with a beyond-admirable agenda. This year’s gala–kicking off Saturday, June 23rd–will honor JJ Totah (recipient of the HRC Visibility Award) and Carol Gnade (recipient of the HRC Champion for Equality Award) for their invaluable work in ensuring equality for all, both locally and nationally. Plus, following suit with events past, DJ Young 1’s ever-adept beats are set to underscore the evening. Proceeds from the event will be used to sustain HRC’s continued, valiant efforts in promoting the ongoing fight for LGTBQ rights.
Because love doesn’t discriminate, and it sure as hell shouldn’t be discriminated against.
