We were asked to check in on the latest/seasonal brews recently released by Epic Brewery; two hours into the tour [and without breakfast], and we were all, like, “I love you, man” to every dude on the premises. For those who don’t know [where the eff you been?], Epic Brewery is one of Salt Lake’s true, small-batch breweries handcrafting the finest ales and lagers you will ever have the pleasure of tasting.
Epic Brewery has grown exponentially since it opened three years ago; and with Brewmaster Kevin Crompton, formerly of Bohemian Brewery and a flat-out, brew-making Jedi, there is no stopping these guys. Case in point: in September, they released the Utah Sage Saison, a Belgian-style ale with sage, rosemary, thyme, and some good old-fashioned kick [delish with spicy eats]. And now, for the holidays, Kevin has crafted a wicked new batch of beer called Elder Brett, a saison-brett golden ale. This puppy's a 9%-alcohol beer, but don't think it's not 100% easy-drinkin'. It has an earthy aroma that gets deep into your nostrils...the tart, apple finish will have you reaching for seconds.
Epic also teamed up with a few other phenomenal [Utah] makers of hoppy joy for the 2nd Annual Utah Craft Beer Dinner at Finca. Here, 70+ diners/drinkers got to reap the benefits of some proper brew-n-food pairings [see a few fun shots below]. Confirming that these guys take their final salvos seriously, Epic Brewing rounded out the meal with Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout, a respectably shitface-inducing 10.5%-alcohol beer brewed with cocoa nibs and coffee beans and aged in High West Distillery barrels. It’s terrific on its own, but paired with Finca’s delicate churros, snuggled alongside a chocolate-stout beer dipping sauce, it put us over the top. Happily so. [*Read Darby Doyle's full Finca/Craft Beer Dinner story here, where you'll get a mouth-watering play-by-play, and a whole lot of sassmouth on the event. #godweloveher]. We’ll be buying more of this tasty stout and the recent releases at Epic’s Brewery Cold Case for every last person on our list this year.
