I have a personal belief that it's best to get what/where you want if you commit to having fun along the way. The UMOCA POP Annual Gala is a fine example of just such an idea. Someone's realized that in the good efforts to keep the arts alive, generous folks are more willing to help in the midst of a good time. It's one of those events to which we COLLECTIVELY look forward each year. Organized in part by our friend and fellow creative, Gary Vlasic [and a slew of other sterling folks], the gala looks to raise funds and gain support for the contemporary art hub of Utah. Although the gallery-white walls can come off as a touch esoteric, we say contemporary art is more fun than not. Remember the delightfully-colored pianos scattered on downtown streets last summer? That was UMOCA's work, taking art to the streets and making it approachable and playful for all.
For those that missed this year's gala, this is the part where we rub it in your face a smidgen [for your own good]. It was a top-drawer bunch in attendance...a perfect amalgam of sophisticated fun. Amazing art, an auction, wining, dining, dancing, and a major bonus in the form of a drag show [oh, drag can be very sophisticated]. Painfully enjoyable and seriously merry. Until next year, UMOCA.
