We're COLLECTIVELY fond of fall in Salt Lake City. It's an incredible season, what, with the perfect temperatures, and the insane way our canyons look just before the leaves fall. But, all this good stuff means that the Summer of ChickensĀ is coming to an end. From simple to architecturally-stunning, we've really only seen the tip of the iceberg in urban farming efforts. Turns out, our locals and their ladies are super impressive.
My final visit was to an urban oasis square in the city, and I'm convinced that these chickens adore their home. COLLECTIVELY, we think it's important that all occupants love where they live. Owners, Angela Carlson and Shaun Jacobsen, are like-minded realtors with Urban Utah. Having lived in their space for over 20 years, their passion has translated neatly into an idyllic backyard where the coop is situated. The chicks' abode sits amid perennial beds, a wandering lawn, and a charming cottage. Prudence, Dusty, Magill, Effie May, and Pearl are well occupied with a long run, a compost pile for pecking, and a couple of family pets. Angela is a board member of the Wasatch Community Gardens, and the two of them are 5-year sponsors the 'Tour de Coop', so they're practitioners of that which they preach. If you've taken the tour, then you've seen the delight that is their back-yard hen retreat -- it was featured twice, and for good reason. If I were a chicken, I'd want to be here, too.
