35 is a good age. Even better if you're an established/amazing institution with substantial community support. The King's English Bookshop has been doing it's thing in Salt Lake for a while now, and it's clearly stood the test of time. The location of their space is a fave -- perched on a corner in the 15th & 15th area, they've got neighbors like Paris Bistro, Fresco, and Caputo's on 15th. This is a likely contributor [though, not the only one] to the happy, relaxed, helpful employees inside. Anne Holman, an employee of 13 years and manager for the last 5, sat with us for a spell and told stories of book signings with renowned authors and children's story time [their programs for kids have seen first-rate results due to BYU's committment to youth literature, she says]. She's also got a tip for what she calls 'the best date in SLC': diners waiting for a table at Fresco [the shared-building neighbor] can enjoy a glass of wine, enter the book shop through the mystery room, and wander the shelves before their gourmet Italian fare. We're in for that. According to Anne, it used to be tough to get authors to consider including our city in their tour, but recent years have seen us as a destination spot. Many book clubs throughout Salt Lake proudly support the shop, including one I think i should join...3 Beers and a Book. King's English is a well-loved and favorite spot in the city. You should pop in for a quiet minute.
