By now, anyone that still thinks the SLC arts and culture scene is small potatoes clearly isn’t paying attention. There’s certainly a lot to shout about, and if you’ve any doubt, simply peruse the pages of this website for evidence of the tastiest variety. We’ve got art, we’ve got architecture, we’ve got a pretty fantastic bunch of unique, funny, friendly, and straight-up rad individuals. And we’ll holler about all the good goin’ on from Rose Park to the Cove any chance we get. So naturally, with the sweltering warmer months well under way, we’re getting a bit giddy with anticipation for the annual Twilight Concert Series. SLC’s Twilight Concert Series has been bringing the noise (and culture and crowd) from Pioneer Park since 2010 (when it moved from its more intimate venue at downtown’s Gallivan Center). Since the whole thing popped off (with an insanely-underestimated debut, featuring headliners Modest Mouse, in 2010), the series has evolved, increased a bit in price (from free), and has grown ex-po-nentially. In years past, our very own Pioneer Park has seen acts from Beck, Beach House, and Ludacris to Iron & Wine, Erykah Badu, and Wu-Tang. Locals bust ass to get to the park before the show kicks off (aptly, at twilight), but the weekly beats-sesh brings folks from all over, including a few mega-fans that make the pilgrimage to see their faves perform in lil’ ol’ SLC.
July is officially here, and since the Twilight concerts run every Thursday evening from July 21st through September 1st, it means all the goodness of 2016’s lineup is just ’round the corner. Attendees can snag tickets in advance ($5), day of ($10), or catch them all with a season pass ($35). This year’s lineup includes such phenomenal acts as: Chet Faker, Big Grams, Diplo, Jenny Lewis, Shannon and the Clams, Pusha T, Digable Planets, Grimes, Fitz & the Tantrums, Jagwar Ma, and Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals. There’s plenty more talent to be seen, though, and as always, local artists will be opening for many of the shows. Upon inception, the goal of the Twilight Concert Series was to “connect audiences with the arts by presenting world-renowned musicians who reflect strong artistic values and diverse social principles in a way that creates vibrancy in downtown Salt Lake City.” And, simply put, we’d say she’s fitting in just fine.
