Mike Hornung is stellar example of someone working to make Salt Lake beautiful, one space at time. Mike is the owner of Future Form Design, a free-form concrete business, which he started in 2008. He’s a self-described design junkie, and has been for as long as he can remember. His designs are unique, well executed, and cutting edge, which makes it all the more impressive that he’s self-taught with no formal training. Mike believes he has something of a found art approach to his designs. One of his latest creations to that effect is what he calls his topo sink — an idea in which he used a topographic map in the molding to create a textured surface.
Mike was born and raised in Wisconsin. He tried living in Los Angeles, but realized that it wasn’t for him, and moved to Salt Lake in 1999. The desert and mountains were the perfect combination for me, says Mike. (We’re keeping score…Salt Lake is winning.)
Mike is always trying to push the envelope and evolve in his craft. His latest business venture has seen him participating as a vendor in the S.L.C. Farmer’s Market. Until this summer, the majority of his jobs entailed large, custom pieces such as sinks, fireplace surrounds and counter tops. At the Farmer’s Market, it was important for me to have something that my customers could carry home with their organic tomatoes. His solution, a line of small, concrete planters. They’ve been selling quite well, which has inspired him to move toward landscape products in the future. He is currently working on a large, outdoor fire pit. Should be toasty.
