In light of the recent (and very welcomed) onslaught of fall-time vibes in Salt Lake City, we decided to take full advantage of what’s presumably one of the last sweater-only days of the season. What better way than spending some QT carving pumpkins in a cute spot like this one?

This home has the perfect entertaining spaces (see: backyard deck with ideal gourd-carving station and a chef’s kitchen that makes catching up with old friends over wine and cheese an absolute breeze). And, although this home does boast a few extra apartments above and below, the main level takes center stage; there’s plenty of space and light for the gathering of family and friends, alike. In short: it was a picturesque spot to spend an autumnal eve.

And, while this serene, mid-city spot did go Under Contract in a snap, we think you’d do well to keep an eye out—there might be some available rentals coming your way soon…

Millcreek happens to be the type of neighborhood that is pretty ideally perched within our city–it’s just minutes to downtown, you’ve got easy-breezy access to Park City (without any of the noise from I-80), and the nearby parks and trails are here in spades.

In other words, this one’s in a good spot.

Updated in 2008, this home includes all the conveniences of the way you want to live, but it still isn’t lacking where charm is concerned. Thanks to an open kitchen/living area, gatherings are made easy here–the well-curated charcuterie board needn’t be sacrificed so you can socialize with your loved ones (or new ones) over a glass of your favorite wine. And whatever your mood calls for, we think you’re likely to find the rest of this home just as conducive to entertaining or a quiet night in. Keep a close watch, friends…

this one hits the market next week.

Buying and transforming this spot into a veritable musician’s paradise has always been the current owner’s intention. And, in almost all ways that dream came true. Many a summer concert has been held here and the stage has seen everything from full-blown birthday celebrations to impromptu jam sessions. With this spot’s current inhabitant set to embark on a new chapter, it was decided that one last concert was in order. So, after a little planning, members of our COLLECTIVE crew descended to watch as local musicians like Michelle Moonshine + John Davis took the stage to deliver a much-deserved send-off.

For those who might be interested in keeping the backyard concert series alive, this casa is hitting the market next week. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the rest of this home has been completely updated, meaning that for the next owner there’s little more to do than sit back and enjoy the music.

The Uffens Building is one of those SLC condo communities that oozes cool. Popped squarely downtown (and Bruges Waffle & Frites adjacent, people), a space in the Uffens is tough to come by and well worth the wait.

ahem…Frosé and cookie dough.

You’re reading now, aren’t you? They served as the perfect accoutrements to game night, which served as the perfect accoutrements to this adorable unit. The space is ideal for a little gathering, and since the building welcomes pets, you can include the pup in the party. The patio is a welcome addition, as well. You’ve got a view to all sorts of goings on in our city, as this is a top/corner unit, but there’s also plenty of privacy.

Keep an eye out…this one’s coming next week.

Sugar House has had our hearts for years. There’s so much good around these parts, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s so captivating. Maybe it’s the bevy of fantastic local businesses. Maybe it’s the walkable streets, huge public park, or the slew of adorable homes that pepper the streets. Most probably, it’s a combination of all of the above…

Whatever the reason, we’re head over heels for this sweet ‘hood, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This particular casa has nabbed our hearts with its personality and charm. Gathering in a space that feels this good is easy—just holler at your people, grab some bites and a bottle, and you’ve got yourself a fabulous night in.

And for fabulous nights out? Worry not–this spot’s go you covered, too. She’s right close to just about everything, and we don’t think you’ll ever tire of exploring these streets.

Stay tuned, friends…
this sweet spot is hitting the market soon!

As fall starts to peek her cheeky face ’round summer’s corner, we thought it the perfect opportunity to bring you along for another rendition of the Weekenders. You all know the drill–we pack up our ride with the needed gear and head to some exciting new location within a few hundred miles to proclaim its glory. The list is long of places to see and things to do, but we’ve been to a handful of amazing spots on the Utah/neighboring state maps, and there’s always more to see. We peddle homes all over this goodly state, and the Provo/Orem area is no exception, so we decided this time to head south just one hour and find a spot that exemplifies that “on the cusp of a new season” feeling. Sundance Mountain Resort was calling our name. And when the mountains call, you run.

Think rustic elegance, tucked into picturesque, untouched mountains.

To some, the word Sundance simply brings to mind the now massive, world-reknown film fest held in Park City each January. This is where locals and out-of-staters, alike, head to see amazing independent and international films, be seen in a new pair of furry Sorel’s, and stalk celebs. But that’s not the Sundance we’re talking about here, and hopefully, this installment of The Weekenders will help you make a new association with the word. This place has been the playground of one Mr. Robert Redford for over 50 years. It was the 60s, and as Bob cruised Provo Canyon, he decided to take a short cut. He stumbled upon and fell in love with the primitive land now known as Sundance, then purchased two acres of land for the bargain price of $500 (sound investment). He built a cabin for his family, and ultimately decided that the natural beauty of the land would require preservation. Enter Sundance Mountain Resort. Think wooded paths alongside babbling brooks, leisurely lift rides with ceaseless views, and quiet nights punctuated by the sound of crickets and a million stars.

This is Sundance, and–trust us–the place tells a damn good story.

Sundance, UT, 1 hour: Sundance is tucked into Provo Canyon on the backside of lofty Mt Timpanogos. Hop on I-15 and head south to Orem, where you’ll take exit 272 (US-52/800 N) toward US-189. This will run you squarely onto Provo Canyon Rd/Hwy 189, which you’ll follow for a few miles, until you spot a narrow passageway (UT-92) to the north–take it. Winding and narrow, this road follows a mountain stream that will lead you straight to the pot of gold. Take a deep breath, turn up Alexi Murdoch, and slow your speed…this is the nature you’ve been hearing about, guys. As you approach the entrance to the resort, the canyon walls will open up to a stellar view of ‘Timp (as we locals like to call her). You’re here. And you’re about to fall in love.

Check In: Sundance Mountain Resort, 8841 N. Alpine Loop Road, Sundance, Utah — The cabins here are spread amongst the property and packed with charm. As they’re tucked up the hill a bit, each cabin is accessible via walking paths, so be ready for a brisk (but lovely) jaunt from the base to your mountain oasis. Should you be out after dark–say having a drink and taking in some live music at the Owl Bar–you need not worry about getting home. The path is well lit, and each room key has a mini flashlight, just in case. Along with the standard amenities you might expect in a modern cabin (electricity and plumbing), you’ll find that these are fit for a weekend of extreme comfort. Proper down pillows and comforters, as well as fireplaces, for those chilly canyon nights. Maybe a cup of hot cider. A few local and sustainable touches, like drinking glasses crafted from recycled glass at the art studio (mentioned below) and handmade soaps from Sundance Farms. Our favorite part, though, is the private balconies, surrounded by quaking aspens. Directions: wake up and enjoy coffee and crisp, mountain air in equal parts.

Eat Out: Foundry Grill; Tree Room, Sundance Mountain Resort — If food was a concern in the least, let us ease your worries. There are a few options on which to feast at Sundance, and each is as enjoyable as the last. The Tree Room is a stately restaurant that eloquently serves up five-course meals in the presence of a 65 ft.-tall pine tree that stands prominently in the center of the dining room. But for those who’ve yet to brush up on fine dining etiquette, The Foundry Grill offers a more relaxed atmosphere and a stellar menu. ‘Foundry’ implies a touch more simplicity, which rings true here, but the service is still five-star. Seasonal menu changes ensure that the freshest ingredients are kept handy, and it’s attached to the aforementioned Owl Bar, where tasty cocktails are whipped up and a small, seasonal menu offered while you enjoy live, local gigs (on Fridays and Saturday evenings…we were there for a rad Hardy Brothers performance). Wake up on a cool, Sunday morning and skip back down to the Foundry for an all-you-can-eat brunch. Tasty dessert table…check. Nature-adjacent patio…check.

Spend Pesos: General Store; Art Studio, Sundance Mountain Resort — We love a good general store, and Sundance has an adorable one where you can find artisanal popcorn, a fishing-themed thermos (we bought that), tote bags, and the like. But Mr. Redford’s vision for Sundance was to create a place where creativity and nature would meld together, so an art studio seems more than apropro. This is where you can get giddy with exploration and learning and making and such. There are several workshop options to get your creative juices flowing: pottery with Tim Rencher, painting with Anne Farley, woodworking with Joe Pearson, ceramics with Brian Jensen…you can even get into silversmithing, should the mood strike. Classes are $95/for a two hour ‘sesh (advance reservations are needed), and the studio also features jewelry, paintings, and glassware by local artists. Don’t feel like buying “things”? Just be sure to check the list of events during your stay. Sundance has Summer Theater, food/wine events, yoga, and a proper spa for all your rejuvenation needs. Sigh. Nature and nurture.

Part of what makes Salt Lake City (and America, herself, for that matter) so great is diversity. Few things warm our COLLECTIVE hearts more than watching someone be unapologetically themselves, and to see that someone accepted and embraced by their community. Now, more than ever, we feel the need to raise a voice and hold open a hand for those who may feel cast aside, so when we heard there was a new LGBT+ Youth and Family Resource Center opening its doors in Provo, we jumped at the opportunity to sing their praises. It’s called Encircle, and their mission is simple: no sides, only love.

Though its new home–Provo’s William D. Alexander House–was built in 1891, Encircle opened its doors just a short week ago. And, since the stick-style Victorian space is said the be the only one of its kind in Utah, we think the house itself serves as the perfect metaphor for the folks it’s meant to hold inside. There’s a powerful sort of beauty in its uniqueness, and we think it speaks volumes for Encircle’s message. The entrance of the house is announced by a welcoming front porch, and, upon entering, one is immediately greeted by smiling faces and an overwhelming sense of “home”. Designers for the space wanted to keep the structure in its truest historical form, and to that, we breathe a COLLECTIVE sigh of relief (the avant-garde staircase with custom firework balustrades is just another example of Encircle’s willingness to embrace the notion of proudly proclaiming one’s difference). Each of the eight rooms was planned with purpose in mind–from receiving room to project rooms–and the art that covers the walls was donated by local artists to show their support. The house is truly the work of Provo’s communal efforts, and the outpouring of support is inspired, to say the least.

An astounding 62% of Utah’s LGBT+ youth attempt suicide. In recent studies, those that are shown love and acceptance are 8x less likely to attempt suicide. Encircle set out on a mission to provide solutions to this epidemic through love, acceptance, and support to all youth and their families. Their scope of services within the community ranges from inspirational “Tuesday Talks”–a confidence-building program that includes cooking, art, yoga, and meditation–to school advocacy, counseling, and so much more. There’s a whole lot of “yes” going on here, and we urge you to check them out and–if you feel so compelled–lend ’em a hand. Love is love, y’all. Let’s take care of each other.

Our love for locally-owned businesses runs deeeep. Being one ourselves, we know the beautiful struggle, and doling hugs to those brightening our city and bettering its skyline, so to speak, is something we’re always happy to do. We’ve been loving on Cactus & Tropicals for quite a while, so it’s about time we proclaim our love for appreciation of what this green mecca has done for our salty city. First things first: If you haven’t been, you must go. The variety of plants will certainly impress, but the trip is worth it just for a stroll through the calm, quiet, perfectly sunlit structure. The ultimate greenhouse. A breadth of bonsais, an orchid oasis, a colony of cacti, a sea of succulents–yes, it’s cactus and tropicals, but it’s also everything in between. They’ve been doing this in our town for just over 40 years now, and you can trust they know their stuff. Precisely why they expanded services to beyond the greenhouse walls–Cactus & Trops handles in-home and -office plant care in over 900 spaces around the city.

it’s more than likely you’ve seen their work. You’re breathing the stuff.

Green is good

Current owners, Scott and Karin Pynes started as enthusiastic and loyal customers, so when C&T founder, Lorraine Miller, was ready to sell in 2002, they happily made it their own. The two love to  love to putter around the garden, and ultimately, they sought to inspire others. Shortly after purchasing, they opened the sister branch (plant humor) in Draper, which is celebrating 10 years this October. Bonus: both spots serve as drop-dead gorge venues for events of all sorts. For Karin and Scott, the focus has always been to make Cactus & Tropicals a lifestyle spot…a space that encourages folks to live a plant-inspired life, to collaborate with nature in making their personal spaces feel alive and organic and light. A single step into C&T is likely to have you taking up gardening as a full-time hobby stat. Or just filling your home with plants you’ve no idea how to care for. Lucky you…they can help with that.

Provo. P Town. BYU Land.

Whatever you want to call her, our little neighbor to the south is well worth your attention. Yes, we love our home base: Salt Lake City is a fave spot on the map for reasons too many to count, and we’re not likely to stop the public declarations of love anytime soon. But for anyone really paying attention, it’s well known that we are smitten with this state in her entirety, and Provo (Orem, too, for that matter) is a right goodly part of the greater “square” on the map. From the quaint streets to the neighborly people, Provo is cultured, smart, and out-and-out sprouting (more startup businesses here than you can shake a stick at).

In the warmer months, there’s plenty to fill up the ol’ social card.

The Rooftop Concert Series in the summer (note: music scene real hip), for example, or the monthly, downtown art stroll. The restaurant scene here is burgeoning: Communal and Black Sheep have seen high praise from COLLECTIVE clients (pssst…we’ll be telling their stories soon), and there are plenty of other non-chain spots to grab a tasty bite. Outdoor life south of Thanksgiving Point is as lively as it is in our neck of the woods…that is to say, Provo Canyon is a winning choice for hiking, biking, trail running, camping, and the like. Sundance Resort (whose praises we sang here) happens to be a heel click away–just 15 minutes up the aforementioned canyon and you’ll be engaging in things like moonlight cross-country skiing (oooh), potting and painting (aaah), or silversmithing, should you feel particularly inclined to make a necklace…or a pair of spurs. Or you can pack a couple of blankets, fill a picnic basket with meats ‘n’ cheeses, and cruise up to the outdoor theater for a night.

Oh, but you know us: we pair people to space. We match the human to the home. And we do it so exquisitely that you’ll wonder how you ever lived without us. And if we’re talking real estate/design, Provo has the good stuff, no matter which way your tastes run. Extensive mid mod scene? Indeed. You’ll find it in the Tree streets. Quaint, turn-of-the-century Colonials? Why, yes, in the Maeser neighborhood. Craftsman homes in the Joaquin ‘hood, or lake views and easy canyon access in Indian or Sherwood Hills. We even have a clever, COLLECTIVE agent who once called Provo “home” herself and is more than happy to grab you by the hand and show you the town…or help you settle into the space you were meant to call yours. Whether you’re seeking a wee modern condo or a bewitching bungalow, we’ve got your agent, and we’ll find your spot.

Front porch living is kind of where it’s at right now. Long, hot summer months call for fresh air, slowing down, and sipping whatever makes you happy and cool. And an adorable front porch is just one of many fantastic details that this cutie-pie bungalow has to offer.

This is easy living any way you slice it.

Sure, she’s wee, but you know how we feel about that (who cares what the square footage is…it’s what you make of it). She’s packing a punch with this stellar floorplan–as shown below, it’s equal to the task of enveloping your people when they swing by for a bite or a drink. The backyard on this one is just as inviting as the rest. Do a cartwheel or two, lay back and take in the dog days, or pick yourself a pear from the plentiful tree. This is easy living any way you slice it. Stay tuned…you’ll get your shot at this one when we list it next week.
