There are few things that please us like a historic bungalow in the 9th & 9th neighborhood with heaps of charm and a few, fantastic updates. They don’t come along too often, and yet, here it is–available and yours for the taking. Located in a perfect pocket of our good city, where everything you need/want is just around the corner (ahem: Hip & Humble, Brass Smoothies, Tower Theater, Mazza, The Stockist, East Liberty Tap House, etc.), this one has you aaalllll set up to live the good life.

Naturally, we decided to stop by for some wine spritzers…
You know how we do: seeing/feeling the way in which a space actually lives is pretty important to us. And, thanks to the aforementioned updates, we can assure you that this one lives well. From the recently-remodeled kitchen that will host any ol’ gathering with ease to that ample front porch for cool summer evenings and a rocking chair…this space has “easy livin'” written all over it.

Headed to the neighborhood for a movie or some gelato this weekend? Your timing is impeccable…
Swing by our open house from 2:00 to 4:00 on Saturday to see for yourself how this one feels. Click here to see the complete listing with information.

It’s safe to say that we are COLLECTIVELY enamored with clean, intentional lines. The iconic curvature of an Eames chair, the unwavering edge of a Scandinavian light fixture, and, in the case of City Barbers, the succinct symmetry of a perfectly-executed undercut. The fine folks manning the chairs here are doling out cuts that are unequivocally so fresh, so clean. It only made sense then, when a couple of our own started to look a little rough around the edges, we headed over for a little shear-and-shaver work.

The spot itself, located smack-dab in the middle of downtown, is boasting an ambiance that is equal parts moto-punk and old-timey barber shop. From the restored cafe racers flanking the entrance to the vintage barber chairs lining the inside, the digs here are an indication to patrons–both new and returning–of the type of service they’re in for: well-thought out, enjoyable, and with a result that is, aesthetically speaking, cool as hell.

craft. dedication. pride.
Each cut, complete with desired accoutrements, is a full hour in length, and designed to turn the chair into an oasis of sorts. Here, everyday stresses are replaced with the satisfying scrape of a perfectly-sharpened razor against the skin and the smell of carefully concocted shaving cream.

City Barbers isn’t a hard one for us to get behind (and with an ever-growing Instagram following nearing 68k, it seems there are plenty who agree). A fine local business centered around making sure the folks of this city stay as sharp and spiffy as they are salty?
Shave away, say we.

For those of us that appreciate easy access to the city, but prefer the relaxation that amazing views and loads of outdoor space can afford, our listing in Lake Point (ahem: currently on the market) seemed like the perfect spot for an evening of food and friends.

no prettier place than near the great salt lake to watch the sunset…
The ample (and gourmet) kitchen space, open dining room, and seamless transition to the outdoor deck here make entertaining a breeze and the conversation easy. Given the ample yard space, we also found ourselves in the perfect setting to lay down a blanket and have a good game of cornhole (wine in hand, obviously). And obviously, there’s no prettier place than near the Great Salt Lake to watch the sunset…complete with views of both Antelope and Stansbury Island. Looking to get even more idyllic with your evenings? A neigh-borly visit (nailed it) from a few horses should do the trick. Trust us, folks…you’ll want to see this one for yourself. It would be-hoof you to do so soon (we’re done).

This property is–in just a few words–an absolute home away from home. Yes, we’ve admittedly got a thing for charming homes on a few acres of Mother Nature’s good stuff that entice us to drop everything and start living that #farmlife. But, who doesn’t? This particular sweet spot (which is on the market right now) is especially tempting, so a few from our COLLECTIVE gang (kiddo in tow) headed up to Heber for a day of hot toddies, roasted hot dogs, s’mores, and bonafide country contentment.

It was a scene ripe for the Norman Rockwell-iest painting you can imagine.
We hung out with the goats (the adorable, black one passes out when she’s scared, FYI), dug up carrots and beets (thanks to Natasha for being such a gracious hostess) to take home, and had a swing in the middle of a field. We cozied up around the fire, chatted in the Airstream, took in the views, and bonded with the resident hens (we’re still reeling from the idyllic reality of it all). Hear us now, friends: grab a few animals of your choosing (chickens or pigs or what have you) and call us up. This is farm-to-table heaven and it’s yours for the taking.

At cityhomeCOLLECTIVE, we love our clients, and it should go without saying that we love their houses, too. So when we get the opportunity to spend some time with both–well, shoot–we’re all set for an evening in.

Easy-breezy conversation just happens in a space like this.
This particular Holladay casa is sporting both interior square footage aplenty and ample outdoor space, so we were grateful for the opportunity to spend an afternoon of Scrabble, lemonade, and infinitely good convo with the pair who currently reside here. Indoor/outdoor time is easily divided, here. The kitchen and (huge) family room lend themselves to easy conversation and comfortable entertaining (see: aforementioned board game just steps from a cheese platter), and the backyard space is both extremely private and nicely landscaped (Aspen trees included). Easy-breezy conversation just happens in a space like this. Have a look for yourself, and we suspect you’ll be prepared to stick around for more than an afternoon.

There are perks of loving where you work. Fantastic coworkers, a beautiful work space, and stellar clients are but a few–but, of course, there is the downside, as well (see: 15-hour workdays, and eating most meals either at a desk or in a car). At cityhomeCOLLECTIVE, we’ve been known to burn the midnight oil on occasion. And while we’d do anything for our amazing clients, sometimes we have to remind ourselves to treat ourselves.
Yes, lunch is fine and dinner is divine, but there’s nothing quite like a spa day, is there?

the goal was to evoke a “timeless and heavenly elegance in a simplistic design.” they nailed it.
Which is precisely why we were so delighted when a few of our crew were invited to enjoy a day at spaDAY. You may have noticed the space; it’s perched next to downtown’s City Creek Center, and while tiny, was thoughtfully remodeled and designed to perfection. You’ll notice that the space feels perfectly in sync with the bustling city that surrounds it, and that’s no accident. “The beauty of downtown is framed through our front curved window,” says owner Paulina Greaves. “Really, we wanted to showcase an elegant-yet-playful boutique spa in the heart of the hustle and bustle.” The space was designed by Paulina’s father Don Brady (of Don Brady Design), and Paulina was involved every step of the way.

All told, we left spaDAY feeling 20 years younger and worlds better.
Being greeted by a friendly staff (and drinks and fresh pastries) was the perfect start to our afternoon of treatments (we were partial to the micro-current facials, massages, and pedicures). According to Paulina, the space was designed to help patrons “unwind with innovative and radically effective treatments, administered by talented and friendly peeps” (a business model we happen to love), and we can attest to the effectiveness of chilling out in such a consciously-curated space.

We love where we work, and we’ve got a hunch you do, too. True or false? I loooooove my job. I love all of the incredibly amazing people I have the pleasure to surround myself by. I truly get to know people in very unique ways, with depth. And they know me. We are all flawed and imperfect. That is the beauty of beauty. I get to know how truly amazing people are, caring, energetic. Thoughtful and so much more. I love the experiences I have because of it. PLUS, I get to make a living at it.
Do you have a particular beauty philosophy that you incorporate into your treatments? I love to watch the transformation take place with simple and proven techniques, healthy ingredients with remarkable successes. I love it when my clients learn to ditch their skin-covering foundation and let their true brilliance shine through, because their skin looks so much better without. Revive your skin within!
And your personal favorite treatment? The Glow and Go Instant Lift Facial ($135) was an immediate hit when we introduced it. Our clients/friends are CONSISTENTLY wow-ed by its effectiveness. It is continually gifted to friends, colleagues, mothers, clients and so many more because of the immediate “Photo-Shopped Finish” Look. Its instant success makes it such a staple. I also love the seasonal treatments we have. One is called “Hot Toddie For Your Body” ($220) includes a proprietary blend of skin quenching and nourishing ingredients such as Colloidal Oatmeal, Allontoin, Honey, Wasabi, and White Tea, all of which is infused into the skin deeper in a steamy cocoon. Afterwards, revamp and Soothing long warmed 75 Minute Luxe Massage using our exclusive blend of olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, bergamot, chamomile and so much more. We have even more amazing treatments in the pipeline. Stay tuned.

It’s unlikely that you missed it when we posted this listing last week. You know, the one with the unbelievable pool and the equally unbelievable valley view from said pool. But on the off chance that a few of you did accidentally hit snooze (shaaaame), we met up with a few pals at the property to give this back yard a test run for ourselves.

Really, friends, this is the kind of back yard from which summer dreams are made.
Full disclosure: we weren’t just in the back yard. The downstairs bar in the home (pool table and a hot tub in there, too, but we didn’t get into that) served up some fitting cocktails and a few snacks to enjoy outside under the wisteria-covered gazebo (worth noting: we also didn’t use the fireplace under said gazebo, but if this home were yours, you totally could). We were happy enough to get a 100º day, since we were itching to give that pool a run. Really, friends, this is the kind of back yard from which summer dreams are made. It’s kind of like a private resort…but you can just call it ‘home’.

Gone are the days when Salt Lake City [or Utah, for that matter] was sorely lacking in legitimate spots to get a good bit of booze without flashing a membership or getting sponsored by a stranger to whom you were then obliged to buy a drink. Thank god. In fact, our little red state [that cast the 36th and final vote to repeal prohibition, mind you] has come miles and miles since then. So far, in fact, that we’ve got an actual wine bar. For wine. Like, a place to go grab a glass of really great wine. Sans food!
BTG (an apt abbreviation for “By The Glass”) is not a dry place…
There’s wine on tap [*single happy tear streaks down cheek], made possible by argon gas, which prevents it all from oxidizing. All 75 options are available in 2oz., 5oz., or full bottles, but they’ve also got specialty cocktails, and a changing menu of small plates. In a stroke of genius [or hunger], they also forged a mutually beneficial friendship with next-door neighbor, Caffé Molise. Translation: those who prefer amazing Italian food with their glass of vino can order from CM’s tasty menu until 10pm.

We had a little chat with BTG’s owner, Fred Moesinger, and he answered a few questions about this highly drinkable spot…
Tell us about the inspiration for opening this mecca of wines, both red and white: As my wife and I have gotten older, we wanted a place where we could go and relax with a nice glass of wine, so that’s what we’ve created with BTG Wine Bar. We have an upscale and relaxed atmosphere. We are wine-centric, but we feature craft cocktails and local beers, too. The bar is branded as a bar for adults–no televisions, no thumping DJ-driven music, and no pool tables or arcade games.
Have you always loved wine? Because we have. Yes! Well, since I was allowed to drink. Our appreciation and understanding of wine has continued to grow, with education and trips and travel to Europe and California.
Tell us about the space conversion. Was there anything about its previous incarnation that made the transition particularly easy or difficult? The physical bar was in place and a lot of the “guts” of the space were there. We did quite a bit of work behind the bar and had to modify things a bit to accommodate the wine cabinets that allow us the large, by-the-glass selection. We had to source fixtures and when we couldn’t find the particular look we were going for, we had to make some of the stuff ourselves. The booths were in place, but the upholstery was pretty tired, so we had those repaired and changed up the color. Painting of course. We replaced all of the lighting. I’m sure there’s more.

Any roadblocks–negotiable or otherwise–when applying for the liquor license? We didn’t really run in to roadblocks…except for the shortage of “club liquor licenses” that Utah has. We were on the list for about 15 months waiting to open. Eventually, we got a “seasonal” permit, which would have allowed us to operate for only 6 months out of the year. Before we had to close for the “season,” however, we were able to convert to a full-year license.
We’re grateful for that. Let’s gab about the actual wine menu…does it change frequently? How do you choose it? The menu changes 3 to 5 times per year. We do have a lot of items which we consider “core” items that are great wines from great producers that we tend to keep on year round. Our Sommelier, Louis Koppel, and manager, Jesse Garrett, head up the wine list and cocktail list changes based on customer feedback, current trends, and of course the big one—state availability. We work with local brokers like Francis Fecteau [with Libation] and the state to bring in special orders. Other than that, we look at state availability, national press, reputation, customer demand, and price point.
Do you have a favorite bottle you’d recommend? There are plenty I’d recommend! Recently, I’ve been loving our sister-restaurant’s blend—the 2012 Caffé Molise Rosso. It’s exclusive and it’s a blend of mostly Zinfandel with a bit of Syrah and a splash of a field blend of grapes. It’s an easy drinking wine that is great with food or on its own. Our best seller has been the Belle Glos Pinot Noir.
Tell us about BTG and SLC: As far as the role that BTG plays in the community–we are advocates for the responsible appreciation and consumption of wine. We enjoy talking and learning about wine, drinking wine, and promoting wine education in Utah. We’ve allowed our space to be used for educational events relating to wine and food.
