The holidays are approaching at record speed, it seems, and 2018’ll be wrapping up before you can say “auld lang syne”. For those of you with a new place to call “home” on that New Year’s to-do list, we say there’s still time—and we’ve got just the spot. This ridiculously charming space is seated in Daybreak, and if you’re not yet acquainted with this ‘hood, allow us to introduce you. The Daybreak community is situated just west of South Jordan, and it’s been rated in the top 20 of master-planned communities in the US (see here and here). As far as pluses go, it’s full of ‘em. There are currently 24 parks, five pools, and one lake (free canoe and stand-up paddleboard rentals included) within these borders, but there’s also summer concerts, small businesses, and a communal rec center, too.
never a shortage of things to do, here…

And when the months turn chillier, this particular home also happens to have the perfect sledding hill just steps outside its door. As you can see, we recently slapped on our puffy coats and took full advantage of a recent snowfall for ourselves. When the cold finally got to us, we had the perfect spot for defrosting and conversing, nog cups in hand. If you ask us, this home is priced right and perched in a highly-rated ‘hood, too.
This doorbell’s the ideal one for ringing in the new year, say we…

As perennial admirers of well-appointed homes, it felt only right for us to see how this spot lives. Quintessentially mid-mod enough to make even Don Draper go all green-eyed, these digs have been delectably well preserved. As far as specifics go, there are 4 beds, 3 baths, and near countless original details to admire. The entry itself is packed full of character thanks to the original door, partitioned glass, and clean, wooden pony wall. From there, the space transitions into an open living area whose floor to ceiling windows, exposed beams, wood flooring, and stand-out fireplace all fuse to create a remarkably aesthetic vibe.
It’s one of the coolest spots in which we’ve scarfed down chips and dip, to be sure.

Architectural integrity aside, the equally alluring location is also worth noting. Quaint and connected, the neighborhood is tranquil and idyllic but still adjacent to all manner of local restaurants and retail.
Move-in ready and as mint as they come, this one is the real deal, folks.

One of our favorite things about SLC is the affinity of her locals for the betterment of this city, one boulangerie, bar, or business at a time. In the case of Creek Tea, not only is our community graced with a stylish shop (in a very up-n-coming spot), but we get a built-in culture concept, too.
Here’s how it boils down…

Salt Lake’s beverage baron, Josh Rosenthal (of La Barba Coffee and the forthcoming Seabird Bar), is serving us up a cup of the good stuff, once again. Inspiration struck on a trip to Ukraine, when Josh ordered an afternoon tea and was delighted to find that it was delivered to him in an impeccably designed little pot. It was love at first sight. To Josh, the pot symbolized more than a drink. He was struck with a concept. An idea. And just like that, Creek Tea was born.

Lucky for us, the benefits of the aforementioned revelation are now ours to bask in. The brick and mortar—a cozy, modern, lounge-style setup—is located in the Maven District of Harvey Milk Boulevard. The exterior, itself a striking pop of black, gives way to a wide-open interior that opens up for an inside/outside experience. The Creek Tea menu offers up coffee and bites as well as tea, steeped to perfection and served up in the very ceramic pot that started it all.
Along the tables, you’ll find handpicked books of all sorts, each one for sale. The area for sitting and sipping is a beautiful blend of swank and comfort, and one of the coziest we’ve seen. And, while the concept of “tea time” is still a bit foreign to those of us in the US of A, Josh’s hope is that Creek Tea will allow patrons to come in and make themselves at home, to relax in a solace from society’s bustling norm, and to make time for tea. Chances are, it’ll satisfy a lot more than thirst.
Sit. Sip. Stay a while.
Creek Tea | 155 E Harvey Milk Blvd.

In Liberty Park, you can find anything from food trucks to farmers markets, friendly picnics to vintage car shows, depending on the day. It’s SLC’s central-most park, and it’s a patch of land so lovely we named a whole neighborhood after it. This area is pleasantly perusable in all seasons, so when an available home crops up anywhere near, you best believe we’re all at attention over here.

Here’s the thing…
This particular place—which happens to sit a literal shout from aforementioned park—has a few major perks. It’s been fully updated, for starters, and it also boasts an immaculate (and very private) backyard, which we were delighted to take full advantage of on an evening not so long ago.

interested? because photos/info on this spot will be available exlusively to CHC readers…
It’s a mid-city sanctuary, to be sure, and we can’t wait to bring you all the tantalizing details (including “three-car garage” and “mother-in-law”). We suggest you check back early next week, if you know what’s good.

COLLECTIVELY speaking, we have the inclination to celebrate/applaud every idealist and every entrepreneur working to better our city’s ‘scape one restaurant, one event, or one shop at a time. And to that long list, you can add Flight Boutique, a local spot specializing in high-quality threads, shoes, and accessories.

Prior to its opening, Flight was the longtime ambition of owners Kristen Doyon & Blair Isleib. After high school, the two found themselves attending colleges on separate coasts. But nothing quite beats a childhood dream, and three thousand miles couldn’t keep them from applying their newfound knowledge to their original Utah stomping grounds.
Flight Boutique’s initial Park City location is now 9 years a success.
Capitalizing on that P.C. success, Kristen and Blair recently decided to bring their stellar eye for aesthetic to Salt Lake by opening Flight’s second location. The new digs are superbly situated in Trolley Square, and, following suit with the initial location, the inventory is adeptly curated.

Kristen and Blair source their product from all over the world. And, through their dedication to good design, they have created a store that is both trendy and timeless. Inside, you’ll find an enviable mix of cute, quality womenswear and activewear, all rounded out by a particularly adorable selection of kids clothing. Plus, thanks to a variety of different price points, Flight is an aesthetic, local spot, accessible to all.
Just as it was intended to be.

Remember that insane craving for cookie dough you had when you were a kid? A responsible adult at the counter, cracking eggs and mixing flour while you waited for the green light to destroy that dough-covered whisk. There was a little risk involved, sure. “You might get sick,” they’d warn. Psh. Whatever. Always worth it.
But things are different now. We’re adults(ish). We’ve gotta weigh those risks, or just cross our fingers and hold our breath till the time comes that someone removes them altogether. Well, exhale, friends. That time has come. The age of the dough eater is here.

Allow us to introduce you to Sugar House’s newest sugar house: Dough Co.

This spot is breaking all the rules in all the best ways, and offering up the best part of baking without the risk of getting sick. See, Dough Co. slings ready-to-eat, preservative-free, new-craving-inducing, raw cookie dough (that you’re totally allowed to eat).
Dough Co. is the creation of our COLLECTIVE’s very own Sarah McNamara and her hubby Mike. Their mission? To bring all that we crave from the baking experience–sans the risk of certain uncooked ingredients. Think omitting the culprits means a sacrifice in taste? Delish dough options like Oreo Thin Mint, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Maple Bacon Snickerdoodle, Cake Batter, and the obligatory (and sensational) Chocolate Chip beg to differ.

Within these walls you’ll also find gluten free, vegan, and dog-friendly dishes, so anybody hankering for a bit of sweet will find something they love. Most everything at Dough Co. is made in-house, and it’s offered up in an array of ways—by the scoop, in a shake, or Milk & Cookies style (served alongside a dollop of vanilla ice cream).
this is the ratio of chocolate chip cookie dough TO ice cream WE DESERVE.

Best of all, when refrigerated, Dough Co. dough stores safely for 30 days (and up to 90 when frozen). Bake a batch for your pals, or—who are we kidding—eat it straight out the tub. We’re not here to judge. Rules are: there are no rules.

Looking to take a test drive? Try some for yourself at our 5th Annual Brew + ‘Q, kicking off next Friday, September 22nd. It’s our little way of giving back just an ounce of the love we feel for this community, and–as always–it’s free to you (yes, YOU). Along with a few other fabulous local businesses, Dough Co. will be present, accounted for, and slingin’ scoop after scoop of doughy deliciousness.

We’re city people at heart, no doubt…but we still get the frequent urge to go outside our comfy, downtown bubble and explore the outskirts. Development in our valley is happening at a breakneck pace, and it’s most easily seen when you head south. Daybreak, for example, is suburbia, yes…but with the sort of touches that make it feel special. Petersen Family Farm, an anchor to it all, lends itself as a shining gift to said Daybreakers, their neighbors, and, yes, us city dwellers too…
“CULTIVATING THE FARMER IN ALL OF US. HARVESTING THE SIMPLE BEAUTY OF LIFE.”

Petersen is a 5th-generation family farm and an anchor in the community. Quite frankly, they’ve embraced the urban sprawl in the effort to connect, discover, and grow along with the community. Indoors, you’ll find a small farmer’s market/grocery full of farm-grown produce, high-quality meats, and specially-sourced apothecary items. What’s more, the folks that planted the seeds will check you out at the produce counter. Full circle, indeed.
IT’S AN ORGANIC PARADISE, AND CUTE, TO BOOT.

Step outside, and it’s clear that the grounds here are meant to be explored. A greenhouse full of farm-fresh flowers, animal petting stations, a corn-pit playhouse, tractor rides and the like dot the property, and kids will find themselves well taken care of in the way of things to do. Petersen Family Farm even provides a farmer school camp for the wee ones.
BUT FOOD-TRUCK FRIDAYS, THOUGH…
Because we’ve saved our favorite part for last. Each and every week–on the very day that marks the start to your glorious weekend–six to eight food trucks set up shop, the music is cranked, and the crowd rolls in. Trucks are rotated weekly, and all are encouraged to use the farm’s market-fresh goods. It’s the healthiest, happiest kind of party.

Those who count themselves skilled virtuosos of the cityhomeCOLLECTIVE website have seen these fellas on the pages of said site a few times. We’ve gushed over Derek Kitchen and Moudi Sbeity for a multitude of reasons. The two are exemplary members of the movers, shakers, and ground breakers club, to say the least, and we feel profoundly lucky to count them SLC locals. For two fellas so well versed in ground-breaking endeavors, then, the deed of actually breaking ground was a logical progression. Laziz Kitchen–yet another undertaking that will take time, patience, blood, sweat, and tears–is a breakfast, lunch, and early dinner restaurant, and a tasty addition to the Central 9th area in more ways than one. Says Moudi, “Over the years we’ve found ourselves in a unique position of bridging our passion for food with community engagement,” and Laziz (it means tasty, enjoyable…light-hearted) is the culmination of those years of work. Each dish we tried had us communicating in a sort of humming-and-cooing dialect, and we found neighboring tables doing the same. Plates intended to serve individuals at our table were hastily volunteered to go family-style with a garbled, “you gotta try this.”

Have a seat with someone at a gorgeous, marble two-top…order at the counter for some grab-and-go…bring your book and cozy up in the Laziz nook with a cup of Arabic coffee.
As one might expect, however, flavors like these take time and talent. The two made multiple research-inspired treks to Moudi’s home in Beirut, Lebanon for intensive explorations of the area’s most culturally-intimate elements. They tapped ever-so-patiently into the physical, emotional, and spiritual minutia that go into concocting recipes, generating worth in each conversation, moment, and ingredient. Then, somehow, they conceptually encapsulated it all in one stunning brick-and-mortar. In keeping with the authenticity of Lebanese culture, Derek and Moudi want you to enjoy the fruits of their efforts however you like. Have a seat with someone at a gorgeous, marble two-top…order at the counter for some grab-and-go…bring your book and cozy up in the Laziz nook with a cup of Arabic coffee.

“These are the memories of nurture and deliciousness, in a space where food and human connect, where life’s appetites are explored.”
“Fresh baked pita, beans simmering, coring vegetables and sipping coffee with mom, while fresh herbs donned the kitchen table. These are the memories of nurture and deliciousness, in a space where food and human connect, where life’s appetites are explored. This communal strength of kitchens is the building block of every family, every community. It’s around the table that we share our most intimate stories, where the sense of belonging is felt, where the deep connections of trust are built.” – Moudi Sbeity & Derek Kitchen, Owners, Laziz Kitchen

Our COLLECTIVE worship of space is no secret. And since we air said worship with such frequent public declarations, we needn’t bore you with the details of our multi-faceted love of design or the contentment we find in creating those spaces that so perfectly suit the people inside. Instead, today we wish to convey a particularly zoomed focus for those spaces that find a way to “throw shade” in the most magnificent of ways. A well-curated, dark space can elevate our disposition and weaken our knees. We offer praise to the lighter side of design, too–Scandinavian, clean, sunny scenes certainly warrant devotion–but these wintery days make us want to relish in the opposite. The soft, yellow glow of a heavily dimmed bulb and the flickering fire of dripping candles and their fast-dancing shadows. A cloak of coziness that beckons for melodies of worn vinyl, a favorite spirit poured tall, and a fully-splayed hardback held captivatingly close. It’s an escape from the stir brought on by day, those moody spots.
Be it a lounge, library, or loo, we’re devoted disciples of a dimly-lit locale.

hello, darkness, my old friend…
