Our Opinion: The pair of brick and stone beauties–known as Sampson and Altadena, respectively–occupying the corner of 3rd & 3rd was built in 1906. With proud columns supporting open balconies, a denticulated pediment above the entry, and a structural solidity that would make the pickiest of masons nod in approval, these twins reflect true Neoclassical architecture. They are favorites of ours and apparently the National Register of Historic Places too, for they made the short list. We love Sampson Altadena not only for those crushing good looks, but also because of their perfect downtown location. Being walking distance to TRAX, The City Library, and all the fab dining (think Current Fish & Oyster, for one…Copper Common, for two) and entertaining our city offers, we couldn’t think of a more sublime place to call home. Lucky you, one of these splendid spaces has just come to market. Recently overhauled and opened up, this one boasts a new kitchen, a new bathroom, new windows, and beautifully refinished floors. It’s also one of the few in Sampson Altadena to have its own washer and dryer hookups (Hallelujah!), and out back, there’s a perfect plot of earth for gardening.
