Taylor Mac | Drama + Dazzle

October 24, 2018 |
UtahPresents

Date: Friday, November 2
Time: 7:30pm
Location: Kingsbury Hall

We’re straight up suckers for epic glamour any damn day of the week, and it doesn’t get much more extravagant than performance artist and drag prima donna Taylor Mac (pronoun: judy). The MacArthur Fellow will be performing an abridged version of the award-winning show “A 24-Decade History of Popular Music,” with elaborate costuming by Machine Dazzle, whose gravity-defying regalia are basically wearable sculpture. Telling the story of American history from the viewpoint of society’s underdogs – described by judy as “the forgotten, dismissed, and buried stories” – the show is part musical, part poignant historical resurrection, and all things over the top. There’s also a strong chance there’ll be some cheeky audience participation: a colleague told us that when she saw a 2016 production judy had everyone dance with a stranger of the same gender for queer prom…to a Ted Nugent song. Another review mentioned batting around enormous star spangled penis balloons. You get the gist.

Thanks to the forward-thinking folks at UtahPresents, we’re COLLECTIVELY gathering up our sequins, feathers, and bedazzled garb in anticipation of Taylor Mac’s arrival right here in our Salty City. And, if you’re really jonesing for some glitz and glamour, a concurrent exhibit of Machine Dazzle’s costuming will be on display in the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art lobby until November 2nd.
