Laziz is Arabic for ‘delicious’, and — now — it’s a thriving, middle eastern food producer born right here in Salt Lake. Moudi [short for Mohammed] Sbeity and Derek Kitchen are ardent food lovers brought together via a political blog during studies at USU. They used to take requests from friends and family for their fine fare, but when requests started coming in too often to ignore, they decided to set up shop.
Partners in business and life, the two are currently set up in the Artspace Commons in Salt Lake’s Warehouse District. It’s here that they cook, package, and deliver [via their Prius] amazing and authentic middle eastern spreads. We were so pleased with it, we asked them to put out a few goods at our recent client appreciation party. It went over very well. The quality and freshness of their products is incomparable. Cooked fresh each week and delivered a few days later, you’ll only get closer to ‘homemade’ by putting in the 12 hours to make it yourself.
They’ve kept things fabulously simple, particularly with the beautiful branding job [love]. The Hummus is oil free with a sensational, hand-blended consistency. The Muhammara [to make hot] is super delish, and Corigan put away an entire jar of the garlic spread, called Toum, with little effort. Wherever possible, Moudi and Derek work to put local ingredients to use; if not, they’ll gladly import the best ingredients from Moudi’s other home, Lebanon. Currently, all three of their tasty products can be found at 40 stores across the valley, and they’ve just hired their first employee, Daniel. With the growth rate they’re currently experiencing, plans to move into larger space seem warranted. The new spot will also be the first ever net-zero commercial/residential development. So, they’re batting 1,000, basically.
According to Derek and Moudi, “We wouldn’t be anywhere without Salt Lake, really. It’s our everything.” Copy that. Ditto that. And many thanks on SLC’s behalf. Watch for the incredible Laziz spreads at the Downtown, Cache Valley and Ogden farmer’s markets this summer.
