If Pretty in Pink, Footloose, or Back to the Future taught us anything, it’s that Prom is a magical night. It’s a night of curfews and corsages and spontaneously bursting into synchronized dance. It’s a night where true love is professed and hatchets are buried. Throw in some spokes and a police escort, and you’ve got something truly sensational, indeed. Yes, this year’s Bike Prom was a spectacular display, to be sure. The annual event is held by SLC’s Bicycle Collective, who aim to “promote cycling as an effective and sustainable form of transportation and as a cornerstone of a cleaner, healthier, and safer society.” A noble effort, say we–but the effort doesn’t stop there. The Collective also provides “refurbished bicycles and educational programs to the community, focusing on children and lower income households.” The event, which acts as the Bicycle Collective’s biggest yearly bash, is a celebration of cyclery as well as a benefit to help their worthy cause.
Utah’s notoriously-fickle spring weather threatened to wash the whole thing away, but thanks to a dash of Prom magic, the clouds parted just in time for the big show and the coifed crowd began cycling in by the hundreds. The ride commenced (with over 1,200 riders!), winding slowly from Pioneer Park through downtown, and more joined at every corner. The pedaling came to a close at Pierpont Place, and Prom-goers were met with tunes by Inacio Lopez and DJ Nix Beat, a flurry of food trucks, and–of course–deliciously-awkward keepsake photos taken on a bicycle built for two. The evening was a success, all due to a collective effort made: the SLC Bicycle Collective, the Photo Collective, and cityhomeCOLLECTIVE have all come together to bring you the beautiful result of a delightful local evening. It’s good on all front, folks: a good cause, an on-point theme, and getting down for a great cause. We’re already heating up the hot rollers for next year…
