Whiskey Street | Sips + Eats
Let’s take a trip back to the good ol’ days of our buddy, Brigham, shall we? Legend goes, when Mr. Young was tasked with naming the portion of what is now Main Street, between 200 and 400 South, he dubbed it “Whiskey Street.” It was–we’re told–a reference to the many saloons, brothels and taverns that the gentiles frequented in the area. So, what more fitting in the no-longer-brotheled, but very-centralized section of our city than a modern-day bar and restaurant with roots to the moniker of old? Nothing, say we. So were the thoughts of the owners of Whiskey Street Cocktails & Dining.
For the owners of Whiskey Street, including Jason LeCates, the revitalization of downtown Salt Lake City was high on the to-do list [for that, we COLLECTIVELY salute them]. They got lucky when the perfect spot landed on “available.” It was a 100-year old building with exposed brick and a location that’s absolute gold. Smack-dab in the Whiskey-Street zone of old, it was a find they were unlikely to stumble upon again. And the boozy avenue was born…er, reborn. The design inside is all wood and whiskey, and a nice throwback to the days of old. Rows upon rows of the hooch. Framed out flowers on the walls taken from the original wallpaper. And in our favorite hearkening to what the space used to be, you can enjoy audio of old-timey radio shows in the bathroom. There’s also a detailed history of the area and the building int he back hallway for those whose inner history buff refuses to let them drink without learning.
The goodly WS crew was kind enough to host us for a night out, and we were happy to do it–with more than 100 different whiskeys for us to choose from and a full menu, it really wasn’t a question. The folks at Whiskey Street are working to support local businesses wherever they can [Caputo’s, Creminelli, Liberty Heights Fresh, High West Distillery, Epic Brewery, Wasatch and Squatters are all on their list], and we loooove to eat local. COLLECTIVELY, might we make a few recommendations? Ahem: the Fried Pickles, Rosemary Lamb Chops, or the Wedge Salad, to start. And for a sip of the sauce, order up a Ward Eight [Bulliet Rye Whiskey, a twist of lemon juice, OJ, grenadine, topped with a cherry], or stick to your classics with an Old Fashioned or Moscow Mule. Ambiance, atmosphere, a dash of history. Pour us a drink.
