Design + Culture: Utah Architects Project Launch

From a COLLECTIVE standpoint, we've been looking for ways to appreciate/call out/bow humbly to the sometimes-surprising number of architecturally-significant buildings and homes in our city. There's a host of them, to be modest, and the accompanying architects deserve some high praise from those of us living amongst the beauty. To that end, we're thrilled with the efforts that have gone into this project. We should all be thrilled, quite frankly.

We heard a bit about this from Mr. Warren Lloyd at last night's Pecha Kucha, which kicked off Salt Lake Design Week with a gang of inspiring chats. Sum and substance, the Utah Architects Project will be an undeniably incredible resource for everyone. An exhaustive amount of research by architect Burtch W. Beall, Jr., FAIA [a thousand hats off to him], has culminated in what amounts to the most extensive archive of buildings and architects in the state [Phase 1 dates from pioneer settlement to 1949]. And, with the added help of the good dudes at Super Top Secret, every last bit of Mr. Beall's research has been translated to an online database. What does this ultimately mean? That any and all visitors to the site can search and find the professional profiles of those goodly architects that built our city. Included in each profile will be a list of the architect's works/buildings, relevant photos, and locations. We'll say it again...an undeniably incredible resource.

As part of Salt Lake Design Week, the Utah Center for Architecture will be rolling out the fruits of this unbelievable endeavor this Thursday evening at the historic Ladies Literary Club on South Temple. Naturally, Mr. Beall will be honored for his efforts, but attendees can also enjoy food, drink, music, and the first glances of this vast, digital database. This is a FREE event, and one of considerable importance to anyone who realizes the architectural and historical significance of what's been done. Come applaud those that worked tirelessly to make it happen.
