Field Notes: Use Your City To Find Your Center | State Capitol
If you ever find yourself in need of ‘centering’, I suggest the 3-step process below. Given where we live, it’s certainly not the only option, but it’s a doozy. You + this = state-of-mind bliss.
1. Wake up early and get moving. Park your bike or self at the east end of South Temple before the sunrise. Difficult the first time, maybe…but easier once you’ve seen the fruit of your efforts. [*Note: there's a nice little parking spot in front of my building - The Maryland at 839 E. South Temple - if you'd like.]
2. Walk down South Temple. Take care to look around. History and incredible architecture are everywhere, and every building has something different to say. Sometimes I talk to them. They never talk back. I always look crazy. I never care.
3. Head up City Creek. Take the east stairs that will lead you to the Capitol. Prepare for the sunrise over the Wasatch Mountain Range. In truth, you’ll find little difficulty in getting to your happy place from here. This vantage point is particularly ‘om’ and ripe for meditation, prayer, silence, gratitude, or basic awe-and-wonder.
