Marriage Equality | Holy Matrimony!
Put on your celebration pants and pull up a seat, because you may want to be sitting down for this [it's game-changing news, boys and girls]. Our salty home is now planted firmly in one of the 25 United States where same-sex couples can legally marry–like, today, if you want. As you should well know, our state’s gay marriage ban was brazenly struck down by U.S. District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby last December. The ban was lifted for three weeks before a stay was issued, and we’ve been in a stalemate ever since [with a few steadfast Salt Lakers fighting the good fight all the while]. The wait is over: Monday, October 6th, the U.S. Supreme Court “refused to hear an appeal in a case that found Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional”, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals has ordered the state to recognize same-sex marriage. The lower court ruling stands, and we are officially a freedom-to-marry state. Oh, happy day! Cue doves overhead, flower crowns for all, and RuPaul singing “At Last” from a perch on Capitol Hill. Many congratulations, handshakes, hugs, and pats-on-back all around. We did it, y’all!
