Life in Your Space | Let’s Brainstorm

Where some might see a tear-down shack in this little number we listed a few weeks ago, we see a plethora of possibilities. In fact, a few of us creative-minded cityhomers recently spent a warm summer evening—refreshing Aperol Spritzes in hand—enjoying the quiet street scene and discussing architectural options for this little home. Maybe you’re unsure as to what you might do with this (less than 100k) space if you were to buy it. Not a problem. Here are three different approaches that developed during our conversation:

Shotgun Modern: Think tiny version of this for the exterior. Good, right? And we love the idea of restoring the historic front portion of the house for a living/dining/kitchen area, and replacing the existing rear addition with a new in-line extension that mirrors the form and dimensions of the front. Wrap the addition with a super modern cladding (we’re thinking standing-seam metal roofing) and you’d have a killer marriage of old and new.

Cottage Charm: The current owner has worked with an architect to create plans for a renovation/extension that includes renovating the front of the house to add an uber-cute porch and a slightly wider and taller addition at the rear.  The proposed layout has the benefit of placing the kitchen and living area at the back of the house, which could create an enticing indoor/outdoor flow with a small, urban back yard.

Tiny House: Join the tiny house revolution by tearing down the back of the house and remodeling the remaining 540 square feet to create your own teensy, super-efficient utopia. We’re imagining a galley kitchen, wee bathroom, and a living room that converts into a bedroom at night. Have you seen what they’re doing with murphy beds these days? This isn’t your parents’ old den.

Best part about all of this? We just dropped the price on this adorable gem to $96,900. You’re highly unlikely to find another spot this cute, this close to downtown, and this ripe with possibility for less than a hundred grand. Our suggestion: jump on it, friends.
