We don't dislike Black Friday entirely, folks (it is our favorite color, after all, and if you can snag that one thing you've been eyeballing on the cheap, then more power to ya), but we also won't deny that we're all for Small Business Saturday. Supporting the locals whose businesses, in turn, support our local economy is a worthwhile effort, say we, and Salt Lake City has countless local businesses whose wares are well worth the contents of your wallet. But, for all that Black Friday and Small Biz Saturday can offer, there's also a serious case to be made for Giving Tuesday. For those unaware, Giving Tuesday is a global initiative centered around dedicating a day solely to giving. Last year, Giving Tuesday inspired actions and events that ultimately raised over $116,000,000 for charitable causes across the world.

Now, listen up, as you might find yourself experiencing the first-world pangs of shopping-induced guilt, come next week. And when you're searching an altruistic outlet, you'll be in luck, thanks to the fine folks at Cotopaxi and The Wonderment. #ThisIsHome will be a banger event--a local adaptation in the greater spirit of Giving Tuesday with a goal we can stand firmly behind. It's a Main Street gathering meant to celebrate inclusion, "support our refugee friends, and expand our understanding of community," and all proceeds will go to established programs that help refugee kids in the Salt Lake area. The #ThisIsHome event will include a Main Street art crawl, food trucks, the unveiling of the Wonderment Refugee Community Maker Bus, and the creation of a large-scale, public art installation from attendee-personalized flags representing what home means to them (a topic very near and dear to our home-lovin' hearts). CLASSIXX will provide the beats, and the ever delicious Spice Kitchen (with aforementioned food trucks) will be providing the bites.

Here's the thing, friends: now is a most important moment in time to love and support our neighbors however we can--be it on our streets, in our city, or throughout our state. #ThisIsHome will provide us all with the perfect opportunity to express the sentiment. Let's get started. "Our city's imperfections are ours to repair, and there are buckets of sweat to be shed."
