Our Opinion: “Incredibly cool” is a solid descriptor for the Rowhaus Condos. Simple, modern design attracts a diverse group of residents who can appreciate atypical Utah dwellings. Energy efficiency, insulated concrete-form walls (good for ‘peace’), thermally-broken operable windows, Energy Star appliances, and close proximity to TRAX note a few of the green features that give these units bragging rights. Add to that choice features like hardwood floors, concrete counter tops, laundry room and central air, as well as a 2-car garage and a private yard. Park across the street is savvy for families, and the Bees ballpark is just a skip down the street. All bases covered.

Josh Scheuerman is a bit of a departure from the common order; a sensational human with priorities precisely where they should be. There should be more like him in the world, truth be told. Josh is warmth personified and humanitarianism defined. He’s also the wielder of a phenomenal beard, a super snowboarder, and the owner of an eclectic and varied collection of art that includes some pretty amazing paint-by-number. Last Friday, we checked out Art Adoption — an event conceived and hosted by Josh to help local artists [including himself] find homes for work they have yet to sell. The bi-annual adoption gives him the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for non-profits while ensuring that the artists get 100% of anything they sell. Not surprisingly, this is only one of many undertakings for Josh that benefit the community, promote buying local, and support the arts. A magical human, by any definition. Read on and see for yourself…

Where did you get the idea for Art Adoption? I’ve been painting for 4 years, and have had a few solo shows in which I had shown some art, but not entire shows. I was trying to figure out how to raise money for a down payment on a house, and I discovered that I had a creative way to do it in my basement. I had ‘orphan’ art leftover from shows that was basically sitting, neglected, downstairs. I decided to host a show and sell it all of at a discounted price to clear my studio. I was just hoping to get my art into someone’s loving home and, hopefully, make a little money.

How often does it happen, and how can people find details? The first year I started hosting it, we put one on every four months, but I thought that it might get blown out, so we’re currently just doing a Spring Adoption and a Christmas Adoption. With everything going on in SLC, two per year is a pretty good format. I never try to compete with Gallery Stroll…plus, having one at Christmas will, hopefully, tempt people to purchase locally-made gifts instead of mass-produced goods. There’s an Art Adoption Facebook page — it always highlights current shows, participating artists, and info on sponsored events.

You’re an artist yourself — tell us about your work: I’ve dabbled in a lot of different mediums; pencil, paints, printing, journalism, photos. I’ve been painting with acrylics for the past 4 years, and I hope to move on to oils this summer. I’m fairly new to becoming an artist, but I’ve been creative my whole life.

How do you describe your artistic style? Americana. I grew up in Utah, and everything from my toys to the religion in which I was raised has shaped me into who I am today. Overall, I only know America, and those forces influence my art, be it old motel signs in SLC to bands I listened to growing up. I like to paint what I see, and hopefully, that translates into art. Some of my favorite artists just painted what they saw: Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Thomas Benton, Normal Rockwell, and J.C. Leyendecker.

Do you have a particular creative process? Nearly every time I paint, it’s from an idea I developed over a period of months. I produce 4 to 8 pieces on a particular subject, then I move on to another project. Each project has been unique. I really can’t re-create those pieces. Acrylic is unforgiving, so I move on to the next idea.

Of all the cities in the world, why Salt Lake? I actually grew up in West Valley City, and I have great love for it. I knew I always wanted to be around the place that truly shaped me. When I first started adventuring into Sugarhouse in the early 90s, it was a very different place than it is today. It’s been transformed into something very homogenized, but there are still places and people that make this the best place to live.

Who did you look up to as a child? The same person I look up to most now…my Mom. I have never met anyone as giving and generous with their life as she is with hers. I can only hope to capture that same charity in my own life.

Name some of your noteworthy addictions in life: Snowboarding, road trips, camping, reading, exploring, consumption [food and drink]. After all, it’s the habits you need that shape the person you are.

I’ve teased that your personal mantra is something along the lines of, “Art! Skate Parks! Veggies!” — but, really — what’s your single, outstanding mantra for life? Live in the moment. I have drained my bank account to make an adventure happen. I’ve put myself into some pretty hairy situations in order to accomplish a snowboarding challenge. Pursuing my passions has rewarded me. If you love something and you get the opportunity to pursue it, DO NOT HESITATE. Also, grow your own food, and try out a new hobby already…your old ones are old.

Favorite artist, favorite skater, favorite veggie: Edward Hopper, Rodney Mullen, and peppers.

Do you have any pet peeves? At the moment, it’s aggressive drivers and people that litter. I think we were all raised with a sense of responsibility to clean up after ourselves, so it infuriates me to see so much litter when I go running. Also, drivers on I-15 are homocidal.

What makes a particular space ‘home’ to you? I always have books and music with me wherever I go. In my car, I’m reading 3 things and listening to podcasts and music. At home, I have my art, music, books, and my wife. Those four will do me fine.

Do you have any hidden talents? I play guitar. Since I only do it for myself, it’s pretty unknown.

Tell us how you feel about cats: I’m not sure why dogs came out on top of ‘most popular pet’. I can let me cats out without a leash and they come back. I can leave them all day and not have to come home to walk them every few hours. Cats are loving companions that don’t need the attention of an ADHD child.

Map out the best day of your life for us [past or future]: Have breakfast at The Park Cafe, order the Sherminator. Go up to Brighton and, hopefully, ride Millicent with a foot of fresh powder. Come down for lunch at Lone Star, followed by an espresso for dessert. Have dinner with my beautiful wife at Takashi, and cap it all off with a movie at The Broadway.

Name something you love about yourself: I love that I have kept a journal since I was 12 years old.

What are you looking forward to right now? Spending the summer in Spain with my wife.

Favorite band, favorite book, favorite movie: How about 3 of each? Favorite bands would be The National, Arcade Fire, and Conor Oberst. Favorite books would be The Gunslinger, Wind Up Bird Chronicles, and East of Eden. Favorite movies are Magnolia, Shawshank Redemption, and Forrest Gump.

You’re a man of charitable gestures. What are some of them, and why do you do it? I personally operate three different charities, each for specific reasons. Art Adoption started 3 years ago as an event meant to raise awareness and funds for local non-profits, and to allow artists to make 100% of anything sold during the event. They spend a lot of time and money producing their work, and they should be rewarded for that dedication. Warm Buddies started as an idea I had while I watched the prices drop after the Christmas nightmare. I saw that brand new coats at Old Navy were being sold for $10. The first year, I spent $500 on coats and bought everything they had at 3 stores. Then I gave it to the Volunteers of America Youth Resource Center, Rescue Haven, and the Salt Lake Mission. Each year, I try to buy coats and get ‘warm’ donations to those in need. West Valley Skate Plaza is a project I’ve been working on for 10 years now. I grew up in WVC, and they still don’t have a skatepark. The momentum is shifting, though, and I’m hoping that soon I can announce that the funds have been allocated and the project’s shovel-ready [next spring].

Very favorite drink? Southern Comfort and 7-Up. So good, it’s dangerous.

Last words? Anything we don’t know? Everyone is more creative than they give themselves credit for, more generous than they give themselves opportunity for, and stronger than they think they are. Life is a beautiful challenge that’s happening right now, not when you retire. We have to remind ourselves of that every day. Be surprised, smile, and learn EVERYTHING you can along the way.

Our Opinion: This much square footage for the price is insane…the good kind. The location is tops; 5-minute walk to Brickyard shopping. Top-of-the-line indoor lap pool/solarium, and generous elevator access to all 3 levels. Spacious, to say the least, and oooh, the wood! Two furnaces for plenty of ‘cozy’ in the winter. Private, fenced yard with mature trees and pond. Large shed, ideal for a studio or workshop. Everything you need for ‘home’.

Neighborhood: Downtown

Property Profile: 2,230 sq. ft. | 2 bed, 2 bath

Our Opinion: Broadway exemplifies loft living with a polished touch. All the classic and dynamic features of a loft are accounted for: exposed duct work, seamless flooring, high-end kitchens, open floor plan, warehouse windows, sky-high ceilings. Added perks include some incredible views of our city, and the fact that a brewery (Squatters, to be precise) is nestled against the building, great food and beer at-the-ready. It renders the kitchen superfluous, but there’s a gorgeous one anyhow.

Property Profile: 336 W 300 S | 45 loft-style units | 550 – 600 sq. ft.

Our Opinion: Uffens Marketplace units are pretty incredible, which readily explains why they’re rarely available for sale or lease. The project went up in 2003, but the exterior boasts the look of an old warehouse. Interiors feature high ceilings, concrete floors, and exposed duct work, taking on a deconstructed, industrial-style look. Private balconies, on-site parking, and what, in our opinion, amounts to a top-shelf location. The marketplace downstairs is loaded with great restaurants and shops: Tony Caputos Market and Deli, along with Carlucci’s Bakery and Cafe, Bingham Cyclery, Ekamai Thai Curry, Bruges Waffles and Frites, and Cucina Toscana. Oh, yes…and the newly-finished [and ingeniously-designed] Pallet is just around the corner. The Uffens Marketplace mascot sits at the base of the stairs — a giant, metal piggy bank named Petunia whose donations support art and music in the market. Pioneer Park is right outside your front door for ready access to the Salt Lake Farmer’s Market and a plethora of other events. More importantly, it’ll supply residents with lawn space, shade trees, a playground, and tennis and basketball courts. Pretty much ideal urban living.

Dave Borba is an avid outdoorsman, an adventurer, a world traveler. He also happens to be a native of Salt Lake City; one of its most interesting natives, we say. Dave has dazzling blue eyes, a warm smile, and a killer beard, which he has vowed not to shave until after the Utah Arts Festival. Once you start talking to him, you realize what a creative genius he is. He’s a true master of his crafts; painting, woodworking, and sculpting metal are among his many talents. Every tiny detail in his work is well thought out [or not], and it makes for a masterpiece in every undertaking. He does it all, and does it well.

At what age did you realize your creative brilliance? Wow! Umm…blushing. I don’t refer to my creativity with such words…kinda throws me a bit when people do. I really can’t pin down a specific age. I was always messing around with things, tearing things apart, making new things, sketching, and exploring my world through the creative process.

Did you have any mentors early in your process? I owe endless amounts of gratitude to my friend and mentor, Adrian Prazen, for being such a generous resource and inspiration. He’s a walking, talking encyclopedia. He’s taught me so many things that have allowed me to push my creative boundaries. You should check out some of his work on Etsy. I’d also like to pay respect to a great mentor and influence of mine who passed away last fall, Robbert Baird. It was a heavy blow to hear the news. He was a great man, and a rare breed of craftsman…truly a loss.

What type of art do you most identify with? Hmmm…tough one. I have a hard time pinning something down. It’s a combination of visuals paired with a good soundtrack that I identify most with. That combination, when the mix is just right, stirs me more than just about anything. A good movie nails it, but I’m definitely not a film buff…I don’t have the time for it. Sometimes I like to go for walks or drives, just for the sake of walking or driving – they’re at their best when what I see creates melodies in my mind. There’s something about passing scenery that stirs and inspires emotion. It may be a stretch to call moments like that ‘art’ in a conventional way, but I think it’s art in its purest form. Life is art, right?

How do you describe your style? Eclectic. I have a hard time explaining it. I’ve come up with “Vintage-Inspired Interactive Folk Art” — that’s my best stab at an explanation. How does that sound?

Who did you look up to as a child? My Grandfather.

Who do you look up to currently? My Son.

What part of the process do you most enjoy doing (painting, carving, sculpting)? Carving wood. There’s a very zen-like quality to it, and you have to be present in the moment. If your mind strays, you can lose hours of work in an instant. It’s a very meditative process. There’s also a relationship aspect to it: the wood gives and takes, and you have to respond accordingly with the pressure you’re putting on your tools. It’s like dancing with a partner, and you’re constantly changing lead as you move along. The wood always has a will of its own that influences the end result. When I’m carving it also means I’m working on a new piece and taking a break from the sometimes-monotonous world of reproduction.

Do you have any hidden talents? Oh, I don’t know. If you find any, will you tell me?

What inspires you? Livin’, lovin’ (fallin’ in & fallin’ out of)…life.

What makes you angry? When people ask me what makes me angry. Kidding! I don’t know. Oh! I’ve got one! PEOPLE THAT DRIVE SLOW IN THE LEFT LANE, and STAY there, blocking the lane! I’ve got places to go, yo! Yep. Anger happens.

What is your dream project? Creating all of the bits and pieces for a short film from scratch — story, set, props, score, etc. That’d be pretty epic! I also think retiring from the 9-5 world would be a really dreamy project.

Who is your favorite artist? It changes from moment to moment, and there are too many to choose from to just pick one…

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? I was 12 years old and standing just outside the parlor of a house of ill repute…I don’t think I can repeat what was said here, but it changed my life forever. I just made that up – or did I?

What could you absolutely not live without? The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given…

Favorite/most inspirational place you have traveled to? Ireland. I learned to land on my own two feet while taking leaps-of-faith. I had a work permit, a backpack, and absolutely no idea where I was going to spend my first night after getting off of the plane in Dublin. I also learned how to land flat on my arse. I learned a lot on that trip.

What was your favorite childhood story-fairy tale/folktale? My favorite stories as a child were my grandfather’s stories about fishing, trapping, and working in the mines. He was a great storyteller. Ever since I was a kid I’ve yearned to live a life that would yield fine tales to the ears of those willing enough to listen.

Share something funny that has happened to you recently. Just this morning I put my jacket on upside-down and apparently looked REALLY confused while my co-worker laughed at me. In my defense, it was early in the morning, and last night was a late night full of Bluegrass and whiskey.

What is your favorite art work? (yours or someone else’s) I’m going to say “Flight of the Wounded Bird” (my own piece); not because I think it’s great or better than anyone else’s work, but because it was the most challenging artistic process I’ve ever endured, and I’m still learning from it.

What jobs have you done, other than being an artist? There’s been a handful, ranging from greens keeper to industrial designer, with a dash of photography, graphic design and product development along the way. I’m a fan of havin’ many hats to choose from, depending on the weather.

What’s your scariest experience? Being a parent and realizing that my son is so much like me! Spooky!

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? There are so many places yet to see! Umm…the Dalmatian Coast. We’ll start there.

What superpower would you have and why? Flight. Why? Because it would be AWESOME! My soundtrack would be much like this, Greatest American Hero The Complete Series…but hopefully I’d be more graceful.

What is your favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City? The Park Café. Ask’m for “Borba’s usual”… it’s a tasty slice of french toast with strawberries and bananas. Chances are, you’ll see me there if you get there early in the mornin’. I’m also a fan of Eva’s.

Tell me more about your creative process…I could ramble on, but I’ll keep it short and sweet. It’s fun, it’s frustrating, it’s always messy, it’s all-consuming, tiring, inspiring, and involves a little bit of everything I can get my hands on. Sometimes it’s well-planned, and other times I wing it. It changes day-to-day, piece-by-piece.

What is your preferred subject, and why? I’ve always enjoyed birds as a subject, though I rarely get around to them. I’ve always been fascinated by our feathered friends, their flight, their songs, and their big spirits bundled up in such small and fragile vessels.

What inspires you to keep going, and how do you keep yourself motivated? I have no idea. Just when it feels like I can’t give anymore, there’s an inner urge to push on through. It’s hard at times…it’s hard a lot of the time, but it’s what I do. Last year, I pushed a little too hard for a little too long and needed to take a nice, long break away from the creative process. Now, I find myself overwhelmed by it again in preparation for the Utah Arts Festival in June. I’m trying to stay motivated by finding moderation and balance between creative process and the rest of life — by not running myself to exhaustion. This year I’m trying to make sure I take some time off to play, but it’s hard to take breaks knowing that the UAF is my biggest financial opportunity of the year. I guess trying to keep a roof over my head is a pretty big motivator. LOL!

Describe yourself in 5 words: Optimist | Pessimist | Reckless | Cautious | Dichotomy

Do you currently have any works in progress? If so, can you clue us in to their style and subject matter? Or how they’re connected to or developed from what you have done in the past? Oh my! I have MANY works in progress at the moment! I’m currently in full-production mode for the Utah Arts Festival and knee deep in bits and pieces. If I get to a point where I feel comfortable with my inventory, I have a new interactive piece I’d like to work that is based on my piece, “Lover’s Bloom”…I’ll leave it at that for the moment. Hopefully, I’ll be able to show it at the festival, but I’m not making any promises. I don’t need anymore pressure, LOL!

Do you have any shows coming up? Indeed, I do! I have two shows on the horizon. First up is a fundraiser for Art Access on May 17th titled 300 Plates. I have two pieces in that show, and you can find out more info about the event at accessart.org. You can also see a clip of one of the pieces, “The Wounded Bird Flies Again” on Youtube at Tome Waits – What’s He Building In There?. After that, it’s a big production push for the Utah Arts Festival, June 21-24th. Check out their website for what they’ve got lined up for this year’s festival, uaf.org. It’s going to be a great year!

I designed Pallet with a particular person in mind…me. Selfish, yes, but I was confident that others in our city would also love to take advantage of what I envisioned. Delicious food..of course. Good glass of wine…yes. But Pallet needed to fulfill other needs. As it so happens, it does. Humility be damned, we’ve ended up with an incredible space where I feel comfortable doing any/all of the following [and so could you]:

1) Sipping a tasty cocktail and quietly reading alone while not feeling singled-out or on display at a massive, lonely four-top.

2) Snacking amongst my wide spread of blueprints, books and a laptop; both the tables and the environment are friendly enough to foster it, even once the mood swings with the evening crowd.

3) Enjoying the space at all hours. Smooth transition from day to night, light to dark, quiet to sound, calm to party…the change in energy isn’t jarring. You probably didn’t even know it happened.

4) Treating the COLLECTIVE crew to lunch, a man to dinner, or a client to a cocktail — it’s appropriately designed, regardless of occasion. Try ‘em all, I say.

Yesterday, it was lunch with the COLLECTIVE crew to celebrate successes [stay tuned...more to come soon on our next downtown real-estate and design project]. Good people, new ideas, a creative space, a bunch of wine and delicious food.

Property Profile: 350 S 200 E | 113 res. units, from studio to 3-bedroom | 4 live/work spaces | Pets o.k.

Our Opinion: The ideal live/work spaces in The Metro include street-level office or retail space, second-level residential space, and an interior stairway with direct access to secured parking. Residentially speaking, the Metro is a secured building that includes parking, a specially-landscaped dog run, a terrace, a hot tub, and a permanently installed BBQ area, to name a few perks. One tremendous advantage of living at The Metro is the access to all things ‘downtown’: Library Square and TRAX are just across the street; the new Harmon’s, City Creek, and Gallivan Center are within 2-3 blocks; gallery stroll, Salt Lake Pride, and the Utah Arts Festival are right outside your front door [along with numerous restaurants, parks, etc.]. Views from these condos are varied and gorgeous, including the city and surrounding mountains.
