Our Opinion: We’re big fans of the units in the Sampson-Altadena building. Having featured a number of these puppies, we can assure you that this space is no less tasty than the others. It’s a hip, NY-style brownstone with exposed brick walls, for starters. Beautiful, new kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, and refinished floors throughout. As is the case with all units in this gorgeous, old building, dwellers within can take full advantage of details like original hardwood moldings and doors. Best part: 3rd & 3rd is a COLLECTIVELY-favored downtown location — not only is it a skip away from some of our favorite local businesses like Green Ant, E3 Modern, FICE, and Super Top Secret, but you’re surrounded by stellar food [Copper Onion, Sage's Cafe] and well-mixed drink [Bar X]. Space is important for a myriad of reasons; our well being, inspiration, comfort, and personal expression rely, in large part, on that what surrounds us. Not so surprisingly, function plays an equally hefty role. When cityhomeCOLLECTIVE was hired recently to create an office space for Pallet Bistro owners, Drew Eastman and Rocky Derrick, I prepared to put all of these aspects into play. Pallet is a bustling downtown restaurant with plenty to do behind the scenes, but this office will pull double-duty for Rocky’s other business, Taylor-Derrick Capitol, as well. We needed to create a space to house efficiency, productivity, and multi-function. Let’s break it down:

1. Create comfort amid chaos. It’s easy to write-off an office space as just that — the room where you work. We avoided this by creating a lounge area for comfortable, casual meetings for team or clients. The layout of the room is conducive to a bustling team. We tossed in a custom marker-board cabinet that can be closed to hide top-secret thoughts.

2. Set off similitude with contrast. The office space didn’t need to be an exact replica of Pallet in terms of aesthetic, but a reference to that space was certainly important. We made sure to combine a bit of the rustic and industrial elements from the restaurant with my inspirations from masculine spaces like smoking lounges and old, English libraries. With plenty of dark, moody furniture, it was important that the walls be light in color so as to keep the office bright and vibrant.

3. Save the clutter for the gutter. The overall design is simple and restrained. This second-story Pierpont Ave. space was interesting enough with its old windows and original brick walls…no need to smother the surfaces with stuff. The head of a dead animal and some Courtney Derrick originals were quite enough to round out the space.

Complexity is often lost on people in favor of fumbling and smashing notions together for utilitarian purposes of what could be seen as “full service”. This here is anything but. CONCEPT [smart, artful living] is gracefully mixing art, industrial design, photography, furniture, and more into a one-off atelier of creative passions. John Harris, Jeff Barker, and Jeffrey Potts are men of vision…conceptual vision. They’ve turned a Granary-district warehouse into a stunning gallery, showroom, and workshop.

Labors of love are all too often forgotten in day-to-day drivel, but not here. The balance and self-sufficient nature of this three-headed, artisan hydra is a force to be reckoned with. Locally driven, international class, and humble clarity — that’s a concept I can get behind. Visit daily or during every gallery stroll for original art, custom furniture, and creative camaraderie.

Young Architects Forum Chair, Greg Walker, invited me to take a stroll and a peep at what we were working with. We toured the 69-70 block with our host, Ben Wiemeyer [you know, this dapper fella], and three of the seven competition judges. It’s an impressive gang. In addition to flying in major players like Greg Pasquarelli [founding partner, SHoP Architects, NY], Cathy Lang Ho [founder and former editor-in-chief, The Architect's], and Wins Bridgman [BridgmanCollaborative Architecture], there’s some local forces to be reckoned with. Kirk Huffaker, Molly O’Neill Robinson [SLC's brand new Urban Designer], Mayor Ralph Becker’s Chief of Staff, David Everitt, and County Mayor Ben McAdams round out the jury, which has now narrowed the running to just 15 finalists.

The hope here is that the SixyNine Seventy Competition will inspire real dialogue and, ultimately, result in a well-planned and forward-thinking block or two of our city. The entries range from ‘yowza’ to ‘holy shit, how is that possible?’, and the pool will be further narrowed to just six finalists on May 20th. Winner[s] will be annouced on June 4th, which means you still have plenty of time to make a dent. This competition is worth your vote, folks. Go take a peek at all 15 finalists this very second and vote once a day right up until May 31st…some of these entries deserve multiple casts, for sure. SixtyNine Seventy Project

Our Opinion: This place is, to say the least, a very pleasant surprise…

I’m not sure how I could have expected anything but perfection.  The Regent sits, quite literally, in the heart of SLC; half a block from the Salt Palace in one direction and the new (and incredible) Harmon’s in the other.  A short alley-walk lands at the front door of the completely-remodeled Gallivan Center.  The building is filthy with gaping views of our city.  Oh, and there’s the appeal of worry-free, all-inclusive living.  Seriously, folks…The Regent offers a downtown life that has me reevaluating how I plan to live for the next few years of my life.

We told you about this guy some time last year [see what's below]. Justin Nelson-Carruth is a local artist that we COLLECTIVELY adore. So much so, in fact, that one of his works can be found gracing the entry wall of our new synagogue/office. There should likely be one in your entryway, too, so we’re here to help you out. Tonight, Justin will be at FICE Gallery for his latest exhibit, and it includes plenty of new stuff [some of which is small and cheap, according to him]. Get there. Buy art. Support local. GO.

There’s a relatively small warehouse in our city with a surprising gut. A plethora of artists and creators, each of which with his or her own creative ‘space’, lines the hallways. It’s one of those small, sub-communities that reaffirm the talent that SLC is crawling with. Proof positive, we found Justin Nelson-Carruth inside.

Justin grew up sketching and drawing, a born artist, and completely self taught. He dabbled in photography for a spell, but quickly found himself planted comfortably at his easel again [with oil paints]. As a teenager enrolled at Brighton High School, he took a few “underwhelming” art classes, but was soon accepted into an AP senior painting class that would prove to be quite the opposite. A former full-time university professor, his teacher was “one of those people who makes you confident”. Justin was inspired and motivated to take his talent to the next level.

A couple of years ago, Justin had his first solo show at the Finch Lane Gallery. He’d proposed to the gallery that he display a series of work that acted like a filmstrip; each painting would represent 1 second of a cinematic segment. Not surprisingly, he sold the majority of his displayed work. Then he created more.

Admittedly, Justin tries to evoke feelings of nostalgia and an overall ‘mood of the scene’ in each of his works. Whatever it is you gather from it is the right feeling. In painting and art, “ you get to do what you want. Make up your own rules”, he says. He paints with no pressure other than his own.
