Our Opinion: Some things are best left un-fussed-with: the perfect martini, one’s radio presets, and this fabulous Foothill home are a few rule-defining examples. Built in the mid-century, this ranch-style rambler is seated in the stately St. Mary’s neighborhood on SLC’s east bench (jaw-on-floor views included). As far as original charm goes, this hillside spot is simply lousy with it. We’ll start with that original stone fireplace (which we happen to be drooling over) and move on to the original wood paneling (it’s back in a big way, people). Then we’ll move on to the original and mega-cute kitchen, of which there are actually two, because this beauty is sporting an attached mother-in-law apartment. The setup is rare, but we can’t expound enough how undeniably rad it could be for an au pair, rental, or those not quite ready to empty their nests (or even–gasp!–an actual mother-in-law). Not in need of a second living space? The current owners debated knocking out the second kitchen for a fantastic extension of the main living room (and you can never have too much room for entertaining, can you?). We also happen to have it on good authority that back in the days of suits and swank, this hillside spot was home to more than a few Mad Men-esque shindings. (Picture this: well-dressed guests spilling from the living room onto the patio, cheers-ing martinis to the horizon, while hors d’oeuvres are passed from the kitchen through the shutter windows.) Point is, no matter what you decide to do with this versatile space, you’ll have more than enough square feet of blank canvas cooly-punctuated with vintage trimmings. The authentic, retro-cool vibe is definitely a plus, but the lot upon which this betty sits is the true winner. Out back you’ll find a wall of mature trees, and the front bears landscaping and a half-circle drive (an attached tool and garden shed sits just outside the main suite–just knock down the separating wall for the Best. Closet. Ever). Both the back and front yards are large, lush, and easily viewed through the home’s myriad windows. Also, did we mention those valley views? They’re the kind to leave you shaken and stirred.
