The Hive is Woke | Allies for Equality

11/7/2018 |
Kerri Fukui

Time and again, we'll COLLECTIVELY sing on the importance of equal rights---human rights--and those that fight the good fight for them. For this very reason, Equality Utah's annual Allies Dinner is one of our very favorite SLC events. The yearly party also honors a few commendable community members and acknowledges the strides they've made toward equality for all over the last 365 days. Equality Utah is one of SLC's most fabulous foot soldiers fighting to win equality for Utah's LGBTQ community and their families, focusing primarily on education, advocacy, and political action. The Allies Dinner is a chance to get gussied up and get out on the town for a night of dinner, dazzling entertainment, and down-right inspiring stories of resistance in the face of adversity.

Raising awareness and funds in equal measure.

This year's theme was "Wake the Hive," and we can assure that the night's mood was decidedly "woke." As promised, there were a few fantastic performances and speakers (including Senator Jim Dabakis and student activists from March for our Lives SLC) and each and every pair of Oxfords, pumps, and kinky boots in the house couldn't help tap out a 1-2 step when RuPaul's Drag Race star Shangela took the stage. We laughed, we cried, and we were delighted to see so many familiar faces in the crowd (coworkers, clients, and community members alike). Next year’s dinner will assuredly be more of the same, warm 'n' fuzzy feeling, and we can’t wait to see each and every one of you there.

Wake up and smell the progress.

We recently passed the keys to a home tucked just beside one of Salt Lake’s most intriguing landmarks — a red-brick beauty resting quietly along the edge of Gilgal Gardens. It was the kind of property that stops you in your tracks — full of soul, a little mysterious, and surrounded by the sort of...
